Fordsburg kidnapping

A quiet Saturday afternoon in Zwide turned into a deadly crime scene after a 52-year-old man was shot and killed at his home, prompting a rapid police operation that led to the arrest of a suspect within hours.

Eastern Cape police moved quickly after receiving reports of a shooting at a residence in 1st Avenue, Zwide, at about 1.30pm on Saturday. When officers arrived, they found the victim lying with multiple gunshot wounds. He was declared dead at the scene.

The fatal shooting has left the local community shaken as detectives continue to piece together the events that led to the killing.

Acting on information gathered shortly after the incident, members of the South African Police Service launched an immediate search for the alleged gunman. Their swift response resulted in the arrest of a 33-year-old suspect a short time later.

Police said the suspect was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, both of which were seized as part of the investigation.

A murder case has since been registered at SAPS KwaZakhele. The suspect is expected to face charges of murder, as well as the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Investigators are continuing with the case as they work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.

The latest incident once again highlights the ongoing challenge of violent crime in parts of the Eastern Cape, where police continue to prioritise the removal of illegal firearms from communities in an effort to reduce gun-related violence.
