uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party member Bonginkosi Khanyile says Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, the daughter of party leader and former president Jacob Zuma, was not part of the July 2021 unrest.
Khanyile is among the many prominent MK Party members including Zuma, who are at the Durban Magistrate’s Court to support Zuma-Sambudla.
She is charged under the Protection of Constitutional Democracy against Terrorist and Related Activities Act (POCDATARA) and incitement to commit violence.
Khanyile, himself, is also facing charges of instigating violence during the unrest and confirms that there is a smear campaign to tarnish the party’s image to cripple its operations.
He says, “Remember in July unrest I am a participant and who is also charged and I am going on trial in 2025, so I am a source and I know Dudu was nowhere to be found on that thing. She never looted and she never engaged in the process of looting but she is always been an active member of the party but not in July unrest, I was there myself. There is no case that is going to survive in court.”
Zuma-Sambudla’s brother, Duduzane Zuma says they will continue to rally behind his sister.
He says his sister handed herself over at the Durban Central police station.
“Those are the charges and that’s why we have to be here, that’s what this is about although we appreciate the work that is done by the NPA (National Prosecuting Authority) and the work steps too but in the other hand the people who are human beings that need to be treated accordingly.”
Zuma adds “We see who will win at the end of the day but nonetheless I’m confident this is a necessary step and will take it as it comes. To all people in the doing the good work in the justice system keep up the good work and those who are persecuting some of us take it easy, the more you do it the less incredible you become.”– Reporting by Nonjabulo Mntungwa-Makamu and Khalesakhe Mbhense.
