Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has made a landmark visit to South Africa, a move seen as a strategic attempt to improve ties with African nations and curb Russia’s growing influence on the continent.
This marks Zelensky’s first official trip to Africa since taking office in 2019 and comes amid strained U.S.-Ukraine relations under President Donald Trump, who has suspended military aid and accused Ukraine of prolonging the war.

South Africa, previously hesitant to criticize Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, has now welcomed Zelensky in what analysts see as a shift in diplomatic positioning. The visit is also significant for South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who hopes to enhance his image as a global peacemaker and balance relations between East and West.
Ramaphosa emphasized that discussions with Zelensky would focus on peace efforts, and he confirmed that he had spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin ahead of the meeting. Despite tensions with the U.S. over its previous military ties with Russia, South Africa is now seeking to show it can play a constructive role in resolving the ongoing conflict.
Zelensky’s visit is also part of a broader push by Ukraine to expand its presence in Africa. Over the past three years, it has doubled the number of its embassies on the continent and is looking to South Africa as a potential hub for future trade and diplomacy.
Political analysts note that South Africa must tread carefully to avoid worsening relations with Trump, especially following its controversial genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.
Still, both countries see mutual benefit in deepening cooperation. Ukraine aims to gain African support in global forums, while South Africa sees an opportunity to stimulate trade and investment amid economic challenges at home.
