Woman Appears In Court For Allegedly Staging Her Own Kidnapping
Ntombifuthi Mavis Rumo (37) appeared briefly in the Kwa-Thema Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, facing a charge of defeating the administration of justice after allegedly staging her own kidnapping to obtain money from a family member.
Her co-accused, Bonginkosi Mndebele (27), appeared in absentia because he is in hospital.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), it is alleged that Rumo, Mndebele and a third suspect, who has not yet been charged, met on 7 October 2026 and discussed staging the kidnapping because they were experiencing financial difficulties.
The group allegedly contacted Rumo’s family and demanded money for her release.
When the family could not pay the ransom, the suspects allegedly released her on 12 October and asked her relatives to collect her from Vlakfontein Road.
Rumo was arrested on 20 October after her husband took her to the police. She subsequently pointed out Mndebele to investigators.
The case was postponed to 29 October 2026 for further bail investigations and for Mndebele to appear in court. The State intends to oppose bail for both accused.
