Jeremy Allen White’s acceptance speech at the 2024 Emmy Awards left viewers baffled when a part of his speech was censored.
JEREMY ALLEN WHITE AT THE EMMYS
The 33-year-old star, who won the award for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series for The Bear, had some of his words mysteriously bleeped out, according to Just Jared.
So, what exactly did White say that warranted such treatment?
It turns out the censored word wasn’t an expletive at all, but simply ‘Jesus Christ’, according to People
JEREMY ALLEN WHITE AND THE CENSORSHIP
In a surprising twist, the producers behind the Emmys revealed that an overzealous network censor decided to censor White.
It was not by the production team themselves.
Dionne Harmon, president of Jesse Collins Entertainment, the company behind this year’s ceremony, spoke to Variety about the incident, according to Pink Villa.
“We don’t control the button, and we don’t hear it,” Harmon explained.
“We’re on a delay, so we see what happens.”
JEREMY ALLEN WHITE AND REAL-TIME FEEDS
She further clarified that they don’t have access to the real-time feed of the show. They also don’t have control over the censor button.
This explains why the unexpected bleep happened, even though White wasn’t using offensive language, according to Just Jared
THE BEAR
White’s win for his portrayal of Carmen ‘Carmy’ Berzatto in The Bear marks his second consecutive victory in this category.
Upon receiving his award, White seemed visibly emotional, telling the audience, “Thank you, thank you, thank you, so much. My heart is just beating outside of its chest.”
His speech, filled with heartfelt gratitude, was meant to honour both his co-stars and the impact the show has had on his life.
JEREMY ALLEN WHITE’S GRATITUDE
White expressed his hope that his bond with his castmates would extend beyond their time working together.
“I want us to be in each other’s lives forever,” he said, showcasing the close-knit nature of The Bear cast.
PERSONAL CHALLENGES
Perhaps one of the most poignant parts of his speech was when he reflected on the personal changes the show had instilled in him.
“This show has changed my life,” White said. “It has instilled a faith that change is possible, that change is possible if you’re able to reach out, you’re truly never alone.”
VIEWERS RELATE
While the incident at the Emmys may seem trivial to some, it highlights how sensitivities around language can be a tricky thing for producers to navigate, even during live broadcasts.
It underscores how sometimes, well-meaning efforts to maintain family-friendly viewing can lead to unintended and, in this case, unnecessary censorship.
THE BEAR
Much of The Bear’s success can be credited to the cast’s natural chemistry, according to Pink Villa.
White’s co-star Ayo Edebiri, who plays Sydney Adamu on the show, has been an important part of that.
Speaking to Vanity Fair in June, White commented on their on-screen bond.
“We enjoy each other in life, on camera and off camera,” he said.
“I hope that kind of thing shines through on camera between Carm and Syd.”
EMMY SPEECH
White has a deep respect for his co-stars and the project that has shaped his career, according to Express.
His Emmy speech may have been momentarily bleeped, but the sentiment was loud and clear.
As South African fans of the actor and the show might agree, sometimes the heart of a message can’t be censored – even if the words can.
