Media Statement WESTERN CAPE – Police recovered an assault rifle and a pistol with ammunition in an attempt to safeguard Western Cape residence from the prevalence of gun violence in our neighbourhoods which threatens the safety of our inhabitants. On Monday, 19 August 2024, members attached to the Anti-Economical Crime and the Provincial Extortion Task Teams operationalised information about firearms and ammunition that are possibly stored at a residence situated in KTC in Gugulethu. Upon arrival at the identified address, members commenced with a search of the house in the presence of a 39-year-old female occupant. The members then discovered and seized an AK 47 assault rifle and a variety of R1 and AK 47 ammunition. As a result of the discovery, the members apprehended the 39-year-old female who faces charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.. In an unrelated incident, members pounced on another residence in the same area where they seized a 9mm pistol with ammunition. They subsequently arrested a 23-year-old male for the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. Once charged, both suspects will make their court appearances in the Athlone Magistrates’ court on mentioned charges.
