Media Statement CAPE TOWN – Efforts to rid the Strand-community of firearms that threaten their safety and that are the cause of serious and violent crime saw the arrests of an adult male for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition on Thursday evening. Members of the Anti-Gang Unit conducted a search of a premises in Geldenhuys Avenue, Casablanca, Strand after they received information of a firearm at the identified premises. The members confiscated a 9mm pistol with ammunition which they found hidden under the bed in the bedroom. The adult male was subsequently arrested for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. The suspect is due to make his court appearance in the Strand Magistrates’ court on Monday. In an unrelated intervention, members of the Elsies River Crime Prevention Unit searched a premises in Avondale Road where they found 18 9mm rounds of ammunition and 132 small packets containing cocaine hidden behind the timber in the informal dwelling. A 20-year-old suspect was arrested for the illegal possession of ammunition and the possession of drugs. He will appear in the Goodwood Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 17 June 2024. Ends
