Media Statement WESTERN CAPE – The determination to address the unlawful possession of firearms, ammunition, drugs and abalone were rewarded when police officers detained suspects in separate incidents. Police members of the West Coast led an integrated operation on Wednesday 19 February 2025, in Saldanha Bay. The members were placed strategically in a bid to clamp down on poachers, who are destroying the marine resources. They approached three suspicious males who tried to flee but were apprehended. They were searched and found in possession of 276 units of abalone. The three suspects (foreign nationals), aged between 24 and 37, were detained for the possession of abalone without a valid permit. The suspects made a court appearance in the Vredenburg court on the same day on the mentioned charge. In an unrelated intervention police pursued information and made their presence felt in Piketberg. They noticed a suspicious male who suddenly changed direction when he saw the patrol vehicle. The police members gave chase on foot and apprehended the suspect with a haversack tied to his back. The members searched the male who appeared to be extremely nervous which resulted in the recovery of ammunition, telescopes and a hunting knife. They detained the 18-year-male for charges of house breaking and theft, and the unlawful possession of ammunition. The suspect is expected to make court appearance in the Piketberg Magistrates’ court on Friday 21 February 2025. Meanwhile Vredenburg police were busy with patrols in the early hours of Thursday 20 February 2025, when they noticed a stationary vehicle in Waterkant Street. The driver of the vehicle indicated that he was doing repairs on the vehicle, which necessitated the members to search the vehicle and the driver which led to the recovery of a bag filled with two firearms and ammunition and drugs. They detained the 30-year-old man for the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition as well the possession of drugs. Once charged the suspect is expected to make his court appearance in the Vredenburg Magistrate court on the mentioned charges.
