Media Statement WESTERN CAPE – The Provincial Commissioner of the Western Cape, Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile commended the efforts of the investigating officer and the prosecution team who all contributed to the conviction and sentencing of Busisiwe Thelma in the Vredendal Regional court , on Tuesday 11 June 2024 on charges of dealing in drugs. Initial reports reveal that on Wednesday 26 April 2023 at about 15h30, an inter provincial cross boarder operation was conducted at Klawer Weigh Bridge. Members at a roadblock on the route stopped and searched a Mercedes Benz vehicle that was on its way to Cape Town. During the search members found 41 000 mandrax tablets in sport bags hidden in the vehicle. They arrested Busisiwe Thelma on a charge of dealing in drugs.
On Tuesday 11 June 2024, the accused was convicted in the Vredendal Regional court for contravention of sec 5(b) Act 140/1992 (dealing in drugs) and was sentenced to 10 years direct imprisonment of which 3 years were suspended for 5 years.
