Veteran actor Sello Maake kaNcube condemns false claims about Seputla Sebogodi

A single photograph was all it took to ignite another wave of misinformation on South African social media. This time, veteran actor Seputla Sebogodi became the target of false claims suggesting he had fallen on hard times, prompting fellow industry icon Sello Maake kaNcube to publicly defend his colleague.

Maake kaNcube has strongly condemned the circulation of misleading posts that falsely portrayed Sebogodi as being in financial distress, describing the spread of the claims as irresponsible and disrespectful to artists.

The controversy began when an image of Sebogodi, widely recognised for his memorable role as Kenneth Mashaba in the long-running soapie Generations, was shared online without its original context. The photograph was not evidence of personal hardship. Instead, it had been taken during promotional activities for the theatre production Black Moon at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda.

As the image gained traction across social media, many users shared it alongside unverified claims that painted a misleading picture of the actor’s personal circumstances.

Reacting to the growing speculation, Maake kaNcube released a strongly worded statement expressing frustration at how quickly professional work had been twisted into viral content designed to attract attention.

“As artists, we already face enough challenges without having our work repackaged as propaganda for engagement,” he said.

He stressed that the photograph reflected a professional commitment and should never have been used to fuel false narratives about Sebogodi’s life.

Maake kaNcube also criticised those who knowingly distort facts for online engagement, arguing that such behaviour comes at the expense of people’s dignity and damages the reputation of South Africa’s entertainment industry.

“There is a difference between raising awareness and misleading the public. The truth matters. Respect matters. Our industry deserves better.”

His comments have reignited conversations about the growing impact of misinformation on social media, where images and videos are frequently stripped of context before being widely shared.

For public figures, particularly veteran performers, false narratives can spread rapidly and prove difficult to correct, often leaving lasting damage long after the facts emerge.

At the time of publication, Seputla Sebogodi had not publicly responded to the viral claims or Maake kaNcube’s statement.
