The high-stakes tug-of-war over Video Assistant Referee (VAR) implementation in South African football has finally reached boiling point at government level.

Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie, alongside Deputy Minister Peace Mabe, has officially hauled the South African Football Association (SAFA) to the podium for an explosive, high-level briefing on Wednesday afternoon at Pretoria’s Freedom Park.

With PSL fans reaching a fever pitch over controversial officiating decisions across the Betway Premiership and domestic cup competitions, the Ministry is stepping in to demand transparency and real answers from Danny Jordaan’s football governing body.

According to an official departmental advisory, SAFA leadership has been put on notice to lay all their cards on the table:

The Purpose & Execution: Clear explanations on how VAR will actually be rolled out in local stadiums.

The Delays & Cost Stumbling Blocks: A transparent accounting of progress made—and where the process hit the brakes.

The Way Forward: A concrete timeline for when match officials will finally get technological assistance on the pitch.

“The engagement aims to promote transparency and ensure that the South African public receives accurate information directly from the relevant football authorities,” the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture confirmed.

Why This Briefing Is a Game-Changer

While coaches like Miguel Cardoso and technical teams across the league have continually vented frustration over refereeing blunders that alter title race dynamics, minister McKenzie’s direct intervention signals that the government is no longer willing to let VAR remain a talking shop.

Will SAFA deliver a definitive launch date, or will the technology remain stuck in administration limbo? All eyes turn to Freedom Park at 2pm.
