Media Statement POTCHEFSTROOM – The integrated “Vala Umgodi” operations led to the arrest of 80 suspects between Sunday, 13 and Saturday, 19 October 2024, in Sun City, Rustenburg, Mogwase, Mooinooi, Tlhabane, Marikana, Boitekong and Hartbeespoortdam. All 80 suspects (78 males and two females) were nabbed for contravention of Section 49 (1)(a) of the Immigration Act, (Act No. 13 of 2002). Furthermore, a 35-year-old man in Sun City was given a fine of R10 000.00 on Monday afternoon, 14 October 2024, for Contravention of Section 38(1)(a) – employing an illegal immigrant. Three suspects, two males and a female, in Rustenburg were given a fine of R350.00 for allegedly drinking in public. The team also arrested a 50-year-old male for possession of dagga in Rustenburg on Monday afternoon after information received was followed-up, leading the team to Bethlehem Drive Taxi Rank in Rustenburg. On searching the man, the members found a black refuse bag in possession of the suspect, containing 4,5 kg dagga. The suspect was charged and warned to appear before court for his first appearance before the Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 28 October 2024. A 36-year-old man was caught selling illicit cigarettes in Mooinooi (Counterfeit Goods Act, 1997 (Act No. 31 of 1997) and given a R500.00 fine. In Tlhabane, a 29-year-old man received a R300.00 fine for failure to produce a drivers licence under the Road Traffic Act, 1996 (Act No. 93 of 1996), section 89(1) and (6). In Marikana, a 26-year-old female was caught red-handed on Thursday evening, 17 October 2024, for contravening the Liquor Act, (1989 (Act No. 27 of 1989), section 154(1) and given a R300.00 fine for selling liquor without a licence. Police seized a variety of liquor at her premises. During the operations, the team seized illegal mining equipment such as generators, spades, mining equipment like jack hammers, drills, extension cords and pendukas. Moreover, on Sunday night,13 October 2024, at Tlhatlaganyane village outside Rustenbrug the team seized a yellow CAT TLB.
The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, welcomed the arrests and thanked the members for their continued efforts in the fight against illicit activities.
