Media Statement KAGISANONG – Police in the Free State welcomes the successful conviction and sentencing of a 40-year-old male for the rape of his 13-year-old niece. The incident occurred on 28 March 2024 at approximately 02:00 at a residence in Rocklands, Bloemfontein. The victim was asleep at home with her brother when the accused, her uncle, arrived late at night. The uncle entered the victim’s bedroom, forcibly removed her underwear, and perpetrated the act of rape before leaving the premises. The victim bravely informed her brother of the ordeal, who then relayed the information to their aunt on the morning of 28 March 2024. Following the reporting of the crime at Kagisanong police station, the case was transferred to Mangaung Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit and placed under Sergeant Joseph Mbobo who swiftly launched an investigation, leading to the arrest of the suspect on 09 April 2024. The diligent work of the investigating officers, while being guided by National Prosecuting Authority, Advocate Azola Key, and the cooperation of the family, have culminated in a successful prosecution. The accused has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the heinous crime of rape. The SAPS commends the courage of the young victim and her family for coming forward. This conviction underscores the commitment of the SAPS to ensuring justice for victims of sexual offenses, particularly the most vulnerable members of our society.
