Ugandan National Arrested in uMhlanga with R1.6 Million in Counterfeit Cash

A 35-year-old Ugandan national has been apprehended by law enforcement authorities in uMhlanga after being caught with fake currency totalling an estimated R1.6 million.

Beyond the possession of illicit cash, authorities discovered that the suspect is currently residing in the country illegally, as his official entry visa has expired.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the counterfeit notes were not just being stored, but were actively being used as part of a criminal operation.

The suspect is alleged to have defrauded unsuspecting community members through fraudulent “quick money” enrichment schemes, using the fake bills to deceive victims.

Local police are continuing their investigations into the scope of the scam and whether any accomplices are involved.

The suspect is expected to face multiple charges, including possession of counterfeit currency, fraud, and violation of the Immigration Act.
