Media Statement WELKOM – Members of the Welkom Public Order Policing were busy with crime combating activities around Welkom CBD when they noticed a suspicious male person near Power Meat and Scrapyard in Power Road on 23 September 2024 at about 13:05. Police searched him and a pallet gun was wrapped with a handkerchief and four live rounds of ammunition were also seized. A 42-year-old man was arrested for possession of unlicensed live ammunition. Then members proceeded to Kenneth Salon next to Amogelang Mall; a male person was stopped, searched and drugs were found hidden in his pants. He resisted arrest resulting in a scuffle with police officials. One member sustained a bite wound on his right shoulder. The member was taken to a hospital in Welkom for medical treatment. The suspect was overpowered and taken to Welkom Police Station, where a thorough search was conducted on him. A total of seven medium zip lock plastic bags containing Crystal Meth and 16 small zip lock plastic bags containing CAT were recovered. The 37-year-old foreign national is facing charges of possession of suspected drugs, resisting arrest and assault of a police officer on duty. The two suspects will appear on 26 September 2024 in Welkom Magistrates’ Court. Ends
