Media Statement OR TAMBO DISTRICT – Police continue their efforts in getting rid of prohibited, unlicensed firearms amongst the communities of the district as they recovered yet three prohibited, home-made firearms in Flagstaff on 10 and 12 April 2025. Two male suspects, aged 56 and 68, were arrested. On Thursday, 10 April 2025 at about 01:00, Lusikisiki Public Order Policing members arrested a 68-year-old male suspect at Hlwahlwazi locality under Flagstaff policing precinct for possession of two prohibited home-made firearms, both with no ammunition. The suspect appeared before Flagstaff Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 11 April 2025 where he was remanded in custody. In a separate incident, also in Flagstaff, members of the District Task Team arrested a 56-year-old male suspect at Bhala locality on Saturday, 12 April 2025 at about 23:45 upon reliable information received that the suspect was driving a vehicle in the locality having a prohibited homemade revolver with ammunition. The arrested 56-year-old will appear before Flagstaff Magistrate Court on Monday, 14 April 2025 on charges of possession of prohibited, unlicensed firearm and ammunition. OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana, commended police for working tirelessly in recovering the unlicensed, prohibited firearms and ammunition which are used to commit violent, heinous crimes. “Our communities must be safe and also feel safe due to police visibility, confiscating all unlicensed firearms and dangerous weapons”, said Major General Modishana.
