Media Statement NELSPRUIT – A sting operation conducted by members of the police in Mpumalanga yielded positive results with the arrest of two suspects, aged 26 and 47, for possession of unlicensed firearms with ammunition. The suspects were arrested at Kwamhlanga on Tuesday, 26 March 2024 around 02:00. Two firearms as well as ammunition were confiscated. The Kwamhlanga Crime Intelligence Unit assisted in gathering some valuable information on the whereabouts of suspects with firearms. The Mpumalanga Provincial Task team, that has been established to tackle ATM bombings and Drop-In-Safe robberies, operationalized the information that was provided. The team tactically proceeded to a certain residential area at a place called Moloto, and upon arrival, they found two persons of interest. A search was then conducted inside the house as well as at a shack in the same yard. It was during this time when they found two pistols and live rounds of ammunition. Some of the ammunition are that of a rifle. A serial number on one of the pistols was filed off. The two were not in possession of firearm licences and ammunition hence they were apprehended as well as charged accordingly. The confiscated firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing to determine any linkages the commission of crime elsewhere. At this point in time, police cannot rule out the possibility of adding additional charges against the suspects as the investigation proceeds. The two suspects are expected to appear at the Kwamhlanga Magistrate’s Court today, facing the said charges. The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has reiterated the commitment by the Police to deal decisively with proliferation of firearms in the province. “Fighting crime remains our primary objective and the circulation of unlicensed firearms has dire and negative impact on violent crimes hence we are doing our best to address this challenge,” said the General.
