Media Statement GAUTENG – On Monday, 13 January 2025, information was received about a suspicious vehicle possibly involved with bank-following activities in the Moot area. Despite limited initial information, preliminary investigations were conducted, and a full description of the vehicle and its occupants was established. This information was shared to neighbouring police stations and all security partners under the E2 partnership for tracing purposes. The identified vehicle, a white VW Polo carrying three occupants, was traced in Sunnyside, prompting the planning of a takedown operation. During the operation, as members moved into position, one suspect exited the vehicle. The takedown was carefully executed, and the vehicle was intercepted, leading to the neutralization of two suspects. Upon further investigation at the scene, two unlicensed firearms and false number plates were recovered. Unfortunately, the third suspect managed to evade arrest. The arrested suspects were charged for possession of unlicenced firearms and ammunition. An investigation is underway to determine whether the suspects are linked to other crimes. The recovered firearms will undergo forensic testing to ascertain their involvement in other criminal activities.
Major-General Samuel Thine has commended all role players for their commitment and effective collaboration in ensuring the suspects’ apprehension.
