MANGAUNG – Two men were successfully prosecuted for their involvement in the theft and damage of essential infrastructure belonging to Centlec. The case was investigated by Sergeant Ratiba, with the National Prosecuting Authority represented by Amoré Coetzee serving as the prosecutor. The investigation revealed that during November 2022, the two accused unlawfully gained entry into a Centlec substation. During this incident, they stole electrical panels crucial for the provision of electricity. The stolen panels were valued at R500 000-00, and the total damage to the infrastructure amounted to R2.5 million. Following the commission of the crime, the accused, 31-year-old Tumisang Sello Khosi and 34-year-old Pitso Donald Molalenyane were arrested after being found in possession of the stolen panels. Consequently, they were charged with damage to essential infrastructure and theft from essential infrastructure. After a thorough trial, both accused were found guilty on both charges. On 14 April 2025, the Bloemfontein Regional Court sentenced the two to 15 years imprisonment for damage to essential infrastructure. Another 15 years for theft from essential infrastructure. The court further ordered that five (5) years of the sentence imposed on Count 2 will run concurrently with the sentence imposed on Count 1. Therefore, each accused will effectively serve a sentence of 25 years imprisonment. This significant sentencing underscores the commitment of the SAPS and the justice system to combat infrastructure-related crimes that negatively impact essential services and the community. Ends
