GAUTENG – The efforts of the teams comprising of SAPS, EMPD, Gauteng Traffic, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, Department of Home Affairs, CPF and other stakeholders paid off once again in Ekurhuleni District. This comes after levels of crimes were reduced during Operations Shanela conducted in Ekurhuleni District Police stations since Wednesday 08 January 2025 to Thursday 09 January 2025 afternoon, whereby 251 suspects were arrested for committing various crimes. In Kempton Park during the operations led by the Deputy District Commissioner, Brigadier Lebohang Machakela, members of law enforcement agencies managed to close 4 illegal liquor outlets and 3 spaza shops for non-compliance. 31 traffic fines to the value of R9600-00 were issued, 10 taxis from Kempton to Benoni impounded. One suspect was arrested for possession of drugs (Crystal meth), as well as 21 undocumented persons. In parallel to the operation, an imbizo was also conducted at Kaalfontein informal settlement in Kempton Park, to address crime related issues that are affecting the community of Kaalfontein as well as sharing the telephone numbers of the local police station. Amongst others, (222) suspects were arrested by the detectives during suspects tracing operations, which was conducted on Wednesday 08 January 2025 in the afternoon until Thursday morning. Amongst the suspects, (125) were arrested for contact crimes, 27 for property crime, (17) for contact related crime, 36 for other serious crime and 38 for Gender Based Violence. Members of Crime Intelligence who were operating in Kempton Park area, managed to arrest three suspects, 2 for dealing in drugs, and 1 for possession of drugs. Ekurhuleni Deputy District Commissioner Brigadier Lebohang Machakela commended the persistent efforts of all the law enforcers in their pursuit of fighting crime in the community during the safer festive season Operations.
