Media Statement WESTERN CAPE – The Hawks’ Provincial Head, Major General Makgato has welcomed the sentencing of the two former prison wardens, Message Masijane(54) and Ncedo Eric Matoti(48), by the Bellville Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on 28 February 2025. This was after meticulous investigation by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team into their corrupt activities and both pleaded guilty. They were sentenced as follows: Masijane who is accused 1: Corruption and Money laundering: a fine of R100 000 or 10 years imprisonment, half of the sentence was suspended for a period of five years on condition that the accused is not convicted of corruption, fraud, money laundering, theft or any other attempt during the period of suspension. Matoti who is accused 2: Corruption and Money Laundering: a fine of R100 000 or 10 years imprisonment, half of the sentence was suspended for a period of five years on condition that the accused is not convicted of corruption, fraud, money laundering, theft or any attempt during the period of suspension. Both accused were further declared unfit to possess firearm. Effectively, the sentence amounts to a fine of R50 000.00 or 5 years direct imprisonment each. This sentence stems from 2019 to 2021 when the two prison wardens, Masijane and Matoti of Goodwood Correctional Services were involved in corrupt activities. They were requesting money from a prisoner in exchange for favours and privileges. Investigation revealed that some of the cash from the bank accounts of the accused was channeled into the bank accounts of their friends to the total value of R355 000.00. Ends
