Media Statement TSOLO – An intelligence driven operation led to the arrest of two men for possession of prohibited firearms (serial numbers filed off) and illegal possession of ammunition. A municipal employee’s private vehicle with two of her ‘bodyguards’ was stopped along the N2 between Qumbu and Mthatha yesterday, and the two men were found in possession of unlicensed firearms. On Friday, 24 May 2024, around 15:00, members from Mthatha Tactical Response Team operationalised intelligence information and manned a vehicle checkpoint targeting a certain Mercedes Benz. A few minutes later, a Mercedes Benz fitting the description circulated, was spotted traveling on the N2 and was pulled off the road. Upon searching the vehicle, police members found two unlicensed firearms from each of the two male occupants. On questioning, the third occupant (woman), who is believed to be working for the Mhlontlo Local Municipality, she alleged that the two men were her “bodyguards”. She was taken in for questioning and later released. The two men, aged 30 and 33, are due to appear in the Tsolo Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 27 May 2024, on charges of possession of prohibited firearms and illegal possession of ammunition. Ends
