DA slams ANC-led Tshwane coalition over R2m rates bill for Kleinfontein
The DA has accused the ANC-led coalition running the City of Tshwane of unfairly targeting Kleinfontein with a steep property rates hike, while allowing similar illegal settlements to avoid comparable charges.
The Afrikaner-only enclave saw its municipal valuation jump from R21 million to R291 million, pushing its monthly rates to R2 million. The increase follows a court ruling declaring the settlement illegal due to zoning violations.
The DA says the coalition is applying punitive tariffs inconsistently, letting other illegal developments like Leeufontein and Moshate Gardens off the hook. A DA motion urging fair and uniform valuations across all illegal settlements was dismissed in council.
“This is selective enforcement at the expense of fairness,” the party said, blaming the ANC-led coalition for mismanagement and lost revenue.
