Tshepang Nyathi Laid To Rest After Fatal Spring Day Stabbing
The funeral of 20-year-old Tshepang Nyathi is underway in Refilwe, Cullinan, east of Pretoria, today, Wednesday following his fatal stabbing during Spring Day celebrations last week.
Nyathi was allegedly stabbed on 1 September after a group of young people celebrating Spring Day splashed water on passing pedestrians. Police said an altercation broke out when the group attempted to splash a 53-year-old man with water.
The man allegedly produced a knife and stabbed Nyathi before fleeing the scene. Community members apprehended him a short distance away and handed him over to police. Nyathi was later declared dead at a local medical facility.
The 53-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with murder. He abandoned his bail application during his latest court appearance, and the matter was postponed to 27 October.
As mourners gather to pay their final respects, Nyathi’s family has called for justice for their loved one. The incident has also sparked debate in South African over the regulation of water-splashing during Spring Day celebrations.
