President Donald Trump’s administration is preparing to reduce the number of employees at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and other major U.S. intelligence agencies as part of a broader effort to shrink government operations.
The CIA is expected to eliminate about 1,200 positions, with additional reductions planned across other parts of the U.S. intelligence community. These cuts will be implemented gradually over several years, primarily through hiring freezes rather than layoffs.
Members of Congress have reportedly been briefed on the planned changes, which are aimed at streamlining operations and aligning the agencies more closely with the administration’s national security goals.

A spokesperson for the CIA did not provide specific details but stated that Director John Ratcliffe is taking action to ensure the agency remains aligned with current security priorities. The spokesperson added that the changes are designed to inject fresh energy into the organization, create leadership opportunities, and strengthen the CIA’s ability to carry out its mission.
