Donald Trump has declared that a trade agreement with the European Union will “100%” happen as he welcomed Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to the White House. This marks Meloni’s first visit to Washington since Trump imposed 20% tariffs on EU imports earlier this month — tariffs which have now been temporarily suspended for 90 days to allow room for negotiations.
The two leaders appeared to be on good terms, with Trump calling Meloni a “great prime minister” and highlighting their strong relationship. Meloni, in turn, expressed her belief in the importance of transatlantic unity and voiced optimism about securing a fair trade deal. She also invited Trump to visit Italy and meet with European Union leaders directly.

Italy, whose exports to the US are valued at around €67 billion, is eager to avoid a full-blown trade war. Meloni reportedly aims to persuade Trump to adopt a “zero-for-zero” tariff model, eliminating duties on both sides. Despite her criticism of the US tariffs, she has maintained a cooperative tone and stressed the need for open dialogue.
However, concerns have surfaced within the EU that Meloni’s bilateral approach with Trump could undermine broader European unity. Some officials fear that such individual meetings may be used to “divide Europeans,” though Meloni has emphasized that her goal is to foster stronger transatlantic ties.
During the meeting, Trump also mentioned China, saying he expects to secure a favorable deal there as well. He emphasized that the US holds a strong position in global trade and will have “very little problem” striking deals.
Trump further reiterated his view that the EU must contribute more to defense, criticizing countries like Italy for falling short of NATO’s 2% GDP spending target. Italy currently allocates about 1.49%.
While the White House confirmed the meeting had been planned before the latest round of tariffs, it’s become a pivotal moment for US-EU relations. Meloni’s ability to balance her rapport with Trump and her responsibilities within the EU may be crucial in shaping the outcome of this tense but potentially transformative dialogue.
