Joint Media Statement Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation and National Prosecuting Authority
NORTH WEST – Barry Russon Mansill (47), Edmund Walker van Staden (62) and Carel Frederik Cornelius (64) appeared in the Stilfontein Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 30 September 2024, on charges of contravening Precious Metals Act 37 of 2005 and Prevention of Organised Crime Act 121 of 1998. The trio was arrested earlier today during a disruptive operation conducted in Klerksdorp and surrounding areas. Their arrest follows information received about illegal procurement of gold bearing material by an active mine from unlicensed individuals and entities. Reports indicate that these illegal activities took place between 2016 and 2020. During the operation, gold bearing material estimated at R17 million was seized at various premises. It was revealed during the investigation that gold to the estimated value of R111 million was illegally acquired, possessed, and disposed of by the accused. Following an investigation, a warrant of arrest was issued against the accused. They were subsequently apprehended and charged. All three were released on R10,000 bail, and their matter was postponed to 23 October 2024 for the arrest of an outstanding suspect. The North West Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Major General Patrick Mbotho and the Director of Public Prosecutions in North West, Dr Rachel Makhari, have welcomed the arrest and subsequent court appearance of the accused.
