The African National Congress (ANC) says it mourns the passing of Namibian freedom fighter and first democratically elected president Sam Nujoma.
Nujoma, who played a key role in the leading of South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) that ultimately saw the winning of the country’s independence in 1990, passed away on Saturday at the age of 95 surrounded by his family.
ANC National spokesperson, Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri has called for his legacy to push for the liberation of all Africans on the continent.
“To the people of Namibia, President Nujoma will forever be remembered as the Father of the Nation, a fearless freedom fighter, and a unifying force in Namibia’s struggle for freedom. In his honour we call on Namibia, under the leadership of SWAPO to continue the fight for the total liberation of Namibia and the African continent.”
Unshakeable force in African history
ActionSA remembers the former Namibian president as an unshakeable force in African history. ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba says he has left his mark in African history.
“As the first president of liberated Namibia his contribution to the history of Namibia is solid and can never deleted. On behalf of ActionSA and the broader South African society, I wish his family and the people of Namibia much strength during this time. May his soul rest in peace.”
The Pan Africanists Congress of Azania (PAC) has also sent its condolences to the family of Nujoma and the people of Namibia. PAC Secretary General, Apa Pooe remembers Nujoma for leading the country’s liberation movement and reaching a negotiated settlement for the independence of Namibia.
“The PAC was in the trenches with freedom fighters of SWAPO and other liberation forces in Namibia. Nujoma is equally one of our own. His passing does not mean the end of an era, it rather joins the different phases of struggle into a bond that must never be betrayed, until final victory. May his soul rest in peace.”
