At least 11 people lost their lives when a Bolivian air force cargo plane crashed in the western city of El Alto.
It happened around 6:20 PM local time on Friday as the plane was coming in to land at El Alto International Airport after a flight from Santa Cruz. The plane slid off the runway and smashed into cars on a nearby highway, forcing the airport to shut down for a while.
The defense ministry said the plane was a C-130 Hercules and was hauling banknotes to the country’s central bank. They didn’t release official numbers on deaths right away.
An investigation is now underway to figure out what went wrong.
The ministry put out a warning that those banknotes aren’t worth anything and picking them up or trying to use them could get you in legal trouble.
They urged everyone to stay clear and let the officials handle things.
Reports say some folks showed up at the scene trying to grab the scattered cash.
Videos from the area show the wrecked plane on the ground and cars that got badly banged up.
One person’s sister was in a car when it happened, the plane’s tire came down on it, hitting her in the head and sending her to the hospital with injuries, a family member shared.
