Media Statement POLOKWANE – A tracing operation led by the Station Commander Tuinplaas, K9 Unit Modimolle and Lephalale, members of the SAPS and a private security was conducted to trace suspects. This after the team received an Intelligence regarding the whereabouts of suspects who stole three firearms reported stolen on a farm during the year 2024 in November. The operation was conducted at Tuinplaas on the 03 January 2025 from 16:00. Information was received which led the team to Lefiso village in Mpumalanga, Mamehlake policing area, where the three suspects who were linked with the theft of three firearms were traced and found at different locations. During the interrogation, the team was taken to a location where the firearms were sold. A house was approached tactically and the owner was arrested for possession of two firearms – one black and silver 9mm pistol with serial number still visible with one empty magazine and one 9mm pistol with serial number still visible, one magazine and 12 live ammunitions. Counterfeit cigarettes were also found and the suspect was issued with a written summon to appear in court. During further investigation the team established that the third firearm was thrown inside the pit toilet. The team then managed to dig and eventually took it out on the 04 January 2025. The four suspects facing theft of firearms and possession of suspected stolen firearms will appear before Modimolle Magistrate Court soon.
The Provincial Commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe applauded the collaboration between the Station Commander, team members and private security for this huge breakthrough to seize the three firearms from wrong hands, which might have been used to commit serious crimes within the Province.
