Luxury Shelley Point Hotel gutted by fire
A fire has engulfed parts of the Shelley Point Hotel and Spa in St Helena Bay in the Western Cape on Tuesday. Two helicopter and numerous firefighters have been roped in to battle the blaze.
Neighbouring municipalities have also brought in assistance to help fight the fire.
According to the Cape Times, firefighters were able to briefly contain the fire for the duration of the evacuation of staff and hotel guests.

Eskom: Koeberg Unit 1 passes load rejection test
In a significant milestone for South Africa’s energy sector, Eskom has announced the successful completion of the full load rejection test on Unit 1 of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station.
The test, conducted on Saturday, 30 December 2023, marks the final step in the rigorous testing process following the installation of new steam generators.

The Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens, also known as AmaPanyaza, have shown their worth over the festive season having partnered with other law enforcement agencies to fight crime in Gauteng.
Together with other law enforcement agencies, including the South African Police Service (SAPS), were out in full swing to ensure that the public of Gauteng is and feels safe during the New Year’s Eve celebrations and beyond as they intensified crime prevention duties and visibility across the province.

In a joyous start to the new year, Gauteng’s public healthcare facilities witnessed the arrival of 112 babies on 1 January 2024, between midnight and 9:30, comprising 59 males and 53 females.
Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, the Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, marked the occasion by visiting Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital in Pretoria North. There, she extended congratulations to the proud parents and distributed gifts to celebrate the births.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has declared its commitment to completing all outstanding 2023 disbursements by 15 January 2024, in coordination with affected institutions.
An extraordinary meeting of the NSFAS Board on 31 December 2023, addressed crucial issues, including the final disbursement of 2023 allowances, budget adjustments, and the NSFAS accommodation pilot project.
