Media Statement EDENBURG – Three suspects aged 37, 40 and 41 will appear in Edenburg Magistrate Court tomorrow, 17 October 2024, on a charge of theft of copper cable belonging to Transnet. One of the suspects, (41) is also an illegal immigrant. On Wednesday, 16 October 2024 at about 04:00, Edenburg Highway Patrol members were on patrol when they spotted a suspicious white Forton bakkie taking the off-ramp from Edenburg to Bloemfontein on the N1. They tried to stop the driver but he continued driving at high speed. Police gave a chase and the vehicle was stopped on the N1 to Bloemfontein. The team interviewed the suspects who gave unsatisfactory information. It was later discovered that the copper weighing 398.4kg valued at R500 000-00 street value, belongs to Transnet. The company was contacted and they confirmed that the cable was stolen near R717 near a farm on the train tracks. Suspects who are staying in Bloemfontein Phase 3 Grassland were immediately arrested. Investigation continues to confirm if the suspects belongs to a syndicate busy stealing copper on the railway tracks.
