Media Statement LIBODE – As police continue to fight the proliferation of unlicensed firearms in the OR Tambo District, three male suspects, aged between 30 and 35, were arrested in Libode and Mqanduli for possession of unlicensed firearms with ammunition. The Tactical team was following information which led them to Mpindweni A/A – Libode on Thursday, 23 January 2025 at about 10:00, and recovered two unlicensed firearms, arresting two male suspects from different households. Both firearms have intact serial numbers, and one was reported at Madeira police station as stolen in March 2024. Both suspects appeared before Libode magistrate court on Friday, 24 January 2025, and their cases were postponed to Thursday, 30 January 2025 for a formal bail application. In a separate incident in Mqanduli, police recovered a 12 GA Shotgun (with an intact serial number) and 11 rounds of its ammunition, arresting a 35-year-old suspect at Holy Trinity Flats in on Friday, 24 January 2025 at about 08:00, after a tip-off. The 35-year-old suspect will appear before Mqanduli Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 27 January 2025, on charges of unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Investigation into all recovered firearms is ongoing. OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana, applauded police for their hard work and determination in recovering unlicensed firearms in the district that are used to inflict so much pain to many.
