Media Statement NELSPRUIT – Operation Shanela yielded positive results as three suspects were arrested and two firearms with ammunition were recovered by the Police. The operation was carried out in Sabie on 23 May 2024. According to information, a search was conducted at a certain residential area whereby members of the SAPS recovered the two firearms as well as 35 live rounds of ammunition. Three Pakistani nationals, aged between 27 and 31, were arrested for unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. The suspects reportedly failed to produce valid firearm licences. During the operation, a total of 11 suspects were arrested for various offences. The number is inclusive of the said three suspects. Meanwhile, amongst the arrested suspects, is a 42-year-old man that was apprehended for unlawful possession of gold bearing soil whilst seven other suspects were nabbed for contravention of the Immigration Act of South Africa. This was after discovering that they were foreign nationals without valid documentation to be in the country. The investigators are working collaboratively with officials from the Department of Home Affairs on this matter. All 11 suspects are expected to appear for charges levelled against them at the Sabie Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 27 May 2024. The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General, Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, has welcomed the arrest of the suspects as well as the recovery of firearms and ammunition. The General further reiterated the issue of proliferation of firearms which remains a challenge, especially in the commission of violent crimes. Ends
