Media Statement POLOKWANE – Three male suspects aged between 37 and 49 are due to appear before Mokopane Magistrate’s court on Thursday, 10 October 2024, facing charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and conspiracy to commit theft of copper cables, following their apprehension on Wednesday 09 October 2024, at separate locations. A planned tactical intelligence operation was conducted at Mahwelereng, Waterberg District in the morning on Wednesday, 09 October 2024 by members of Mokopane SAPS, Mahwelereng K9, and Mahwelereng Visible Policing Units.The team received information on suspects who plotted to commit theft at Mogalakwena mine and operationalized on the information. Following investigation, a 43-year-old male suspect, upon searching his room at Sandsloot village, was found with an unlicensed rifle, five live rifle ammunition, two 9mm live ammunition, and one 9mm empty cartridge. The second suspect, a 49-year-old male, was found with an unlicensed rifle, one rifle ammunition, two revolver live ammunition, and eleven 9mm Blank Ammunition and 9mm Norinco with magazine. The Police proceeded to Malepetleke village and subsequently nabbed the third suspect, a 37-year-old male accomplice, for conspiracy to commit theft of copper cables at the mine. The origin of the two rifles and how they were removed from their lawful owner will be investigated in due course.
