Media Statement DURBAN – Dedication and good work ethic displayed by police detectives at Mondlo police station led to the sentencing of Mxolisi Buthelezi (40) to three terms of life imprisonment after he was found guilty on three counts of murder which were committed at Zwelisha, Nondweni on 02 May 2022. The sentence was handed down by the Pietermaritzburg High Court on 11 February 2025. Buthelezi was already awaiting trial on cases of rape, kidnapping and murder when the detectives linked him to the three counts of murder. Whilst the detectives proceeded with their investigations on a separate murder case in which Buthelezi was the suspect in the killing of Bongani Xaba at Mvuyane area, they positively linked him to the Nondweni triple murder. With the Pietermaritzburg High Court having already handed a life imprisonment sentence to Buthelezi for the murder of Xaba, detectives then turned their attention to the Nondweni triple murder case. On that fateful day of 02 May 2022, the cold-blooded killer Buthelezi found Malusi Mabaso, a taxi owner with two of his friends Mlungisi Skhakhane and another man only known as Themba. Buthelezi shot at the trio, killing Mabaso and Skhakhane instantly whilst Themba succumbed to his injuries in hospital. Buthelezi made his initial court appearances at Nquthu Magistrate’s Court and the matter was later transferred to Pietermaritzburg High Court for trial where he was subsequently found guilty on all three counts of murder.
