Three Arrested After Racing Driver Robert Wolk Shot Dead In Esther Park, Kempton Park
Three men have been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of 41-year-old racing driver Robert Wolk (pictured) in Esther Park, Kempton Park.
Wolk was shot at about 16:20 on Wednesday, 16 September, following a minor collision involving his Audi and a blue Volkswagen Jetta. The shooting took place at the intersection of Camwood Street and Portland Drive. He was declared dead at the scene and a murder case was opened at Sebenza SAPS.
According to police, Wolk had got out of his vehicle to assess the damage when an argument allegedly broke out with the occupants of the Jetta. The suspects fled the scene in the vehicle after the shooting. Footage of the confrontation has since circulated on social media.
Investigators later established that the Jetta was also linked to two other cases involving hijacking and murder.
An intelligence-driven operation was then launched involving the EMPD Northern Region Task Team, SAPS Crime Intelligence and Blue Hawk Tactical.
One suspect was arrested in Spartan, while two others were arrested at Enhlanzeni Hostel, where the getaway vehicle was recovered.
One of the suspects then led investigators to a house at Allandale Farm in Mayibuye. Police recovered a Beretta pistol with a filed-off serial number and 17 rounds of live ammunition, which investigators believe may have been used in the shooting.
The three suspects are in custody and face charges including murder, possession of a suspected hijacked motor vehicle, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
EMPD Chief of Police IJ Mapiyeye commended the officers involved in the operation for their swift response and cooperation.
Wolk was a prominent figure in South African motorsport and had been due to travel to Cape Town for a race when he was killed.
