Media Statement POLOKWANE – Thohoyandou High Court in Vhembe District handed down a lengthy sentence, two life imprisonment and 62 years to the accused, Oliver Humbulani Hlengani (35) on Wednesday, 11 December 2024. The court heard that on 23 August 2013, at about 02:15, the victim was at her place of residence when she heard a noise at the door, woke up, and put on the light and heard the voice of a man saying he’s looking for someone. For the second time, the door was opened, and a man entered a room and ordered her to remove her inside clothes and raped her without consent. On the second incident, the victim was sleeping when she heard a knock on the door. The suspect introduced himself, mentioning his nickname. Later, she had a gunshot. He knocked again. She didn’t respond, and he forcefully opened the door and ordered her to lie down and raped her without her consent. In the third incident, the victim was at a local tavern when the suspect grabbed her and took her to his place of residence and raped her. The case was transferred to Musina FCS, and Investigating Officer Sergeant Takalani Milton Kone was tasked with the investigation. He investigated the case; the accused was arrested in August 2013 and was given bail of R2000.00. He went and committed another offense and was rearrested until he was found guilty and sentenced on Wednesday, 11 December 2024. He was sentenced as follows: Count 1: Murder: life imprisonment Count 4: Housebreaking with intent to rape: eight (08) years imprisonment Count 5: rape: Ten (10) years imprisonment Count 6: housebreaking with intention to rape eight (08) years imprisonment Count 7: Robbery: Fifteen years imprisonment Count 8: rape: life imprisonment Count 9: unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm: fifteen years (15) imprisonment Count 10: unlawful possession of stolen property: two (02) years imprisonment Count 11: Attempted theft: Two (02) years imprisonment Count 12: Assault: Two (02) years imprisonment. Count 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 run concurrently with count 1; the effective sentence is two life and 62 years imprisonment. The Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has welcomed the sentencing and commended the investigating officer, Sergeant Takalani Milton Kone, for tirelessly working on the case until conviction.
