NELSPRUIT – Operation Vala Umgodi is in full swing and members deployed in Mpumalanga are not backing down. Their efforts are not in vain as it led to the arrest of 30 suspects, aged between 18 and 32, at Pilgrim’s Rest: 26 alleged illegal immigrants as well as four (04) alleged illegal miners. The proactive, combat and guards from Phoenix Security Company carried out an Intelligence Driven Operation in Pilgrim’s Rest skoomplaas informal settlement and Poniskraans Old Mining Shaft on Saturday, 22 March 2025. It was during this time when the team apprehended the 26 undocumented persons at the informal settlement and 04 alleged illegal miners at the old mining shaft whilst busy with illegal mining activities. During their arrest, the astute members managed to confiscate one phenduka, two generators, one hammer, two shovels, three motors, four 10kg’s of gold bearing soil as well as 15 steel balls. The suspects are expected to appear at the Pilgrims’ Rest Periodical Court soon.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr.) Zeph Mkhwanazi has reiterated that law enforcement agencies will continue to heighten their visibility in those areas where illegal mining activities are prevailing.
