In this video, we delve into the highly controversial ‘Spy Bill’ that is being hurriedly pushed for approval by Securocrats before parliament dissolves in May 2024. The implications of this new legislation are far-reaching, affecting every citizen in South Africa. Once enacted, it will grant the intelligence forces alarming powers, including the ability to subject private individuals, non-profit organizations, religious bodies, and even businesses to state security vetting. Furthermore, it sanctions the widespread surveillance of all communications of South Africans, with minimal oversight.
Additionally, the bill perpetuates the alarming abuse of secret service account funds, allowing for continued misconduct. Moreover, it weakens the role of the Inspector-General of Intelligence, stripping away crucial oversight and accountability from the intelligence agencies.
These aspects closely resemble the modus operandi that led to the notorious State Security Agency’s capture under the previous presidency of Jacob Zuma. Concerningly, the new bill dismisses the findings and revelations brought to light by the Zondo Commission. This raises serious concerns that it could pave the way for a potential relapse into a dark era of State Capture.
Join us in this video as we explore the various facets and implications of the ‘Spy Bill,’ highlighting its direct threats to our democracy and the potential for a haunting repetition of historical mistakes.
