ZWELITSHA – The Alfred Nzo District Commissioner expressed her satisfaction and gratitude to the members of the South African Police Service who ensured that suspects of mob justice in Emaxesibeni (formerly known as Mount Ayliff) were eventually brought to justice. On 12 December 2018, it was reported that, at Ngonyameni locality in the area of Emaxesibeni, the Ntshamba family was attacked by a mob at their homestead where two African females were killed and torched with petrol as they were accused of practising witchcraft by young people of the community. Nothethisa Ntshamba was torched in front of her children in the garden, while her sister was chased and killed at about hundred (100) metres away from the Ntshamba homestead and also torched into ashes. The home of the late Nothethisa Ntshamba was all torched. On 14 December 2018, detectives managed to arrest seven (7) suspects aged between 24 and 32 years, and they made their first appearance on 17 December 2018 at Emaxesibeni Magistrate Court. They were granted bail of R 2000-00 each. On 3 May 2024, the following seven suspects were successfully charged and convicted for three counts of murder and arson. On Friday 12 July 2024 they were sentenced to undergo two terms of life imprisonment respectively for murders and ten (10) years imprisonment for arson and were declared unfit to possess firearm. 1. Odwa Nonjojo (32) While commending the SAPS members for sterling work, the District Commissioner, Major General Nompumelelo Majikijela, strongly condemns any act of mob justice in every community, as it carries criminal implications to those responsible. She urged communities to be patient with investigations, as there are many elements that need to be considered. “SAPS has capable investigators who work around the clock, leaving no stones unturned to ensure that perpetrators are brought to book, ” she concluded.
