The collaboration leads to the success of Operation Shanela

GAUTENG – The Gauteng Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit of the South African Police Service (SAPS), in collaboration with various stakeholders, achieved significant success in combating stock theft and related crimes on Friday, June 28, 2024.
The stakeholders involved in this success include SAPS Head Office Stock Theft and Endangered Species, Rural Safety, Bronkhorstspruit Detectives, K9 Unit for Endangered Species, SPCA, South African Meat Industry Council, Tshwane Meat Safety, Health Inspectors, US Department of Homeland Security, Gauteng Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maximum Security, Sector Patrollers, Transfrontier Africa, and Focus Conservation Solution.

As a result of their joint efforts, four suspects were arrested, two for possession of stolen stock and two for possession of drugs. Thirty (30) cattle were recovered, and five stolen cattle were returned to their rightful owner. Additionally, half a carcass of a slaughtered cow with meat was recovered. Nine kraals with cattle were inspected, and two farmers were fined for not marking animals in the prescribed manner.

The suspects will appear before the magistrate court soon.
