The ongoing trial of separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu has once again stirred unrest in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja. Kanu, who faces terrorism charges linked to the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is set to begin his defence after the court rejected his request to dismiss the case.

Supporters gathered outside the courthouse demanding his release, with activist Omoyele Sowore leading the demonstration. Security forces responded by firing tear gas and sealing off major roads, causing widespread traffic disruptions. Witnesses reported several arrests, including members of Kanu’s legal team and relatives, although police have not released an official statement.

Detained since 2021, Kanu remains one of Nigeria’s most divisive figures—seen by many in the southeast as a symbol of resistance, while authorities view him as a threat to national unity. His prolonged legal battle continues to deepen political and ethnic tensions across the country.
