Ten officers from the South African Police Service and Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department were arrested on duty on Monday. They’re accused of being involved in corruption and fraud linked to a shop raid in Edenvale.
According to reports, during a joint law enforcement operation on June 4, the officers raided a store where they confiscated cigarettes, R35,000 in cash, and several packs of headache tablets worth around R5,000.
They arrested the store’s cashier for allegedly selling illicit cigarettes and detained another staff member over immigration violations. However, it’s claimed the officers didn’t fully record all the items they took during the raid once back at the police station.
The shop manager later questioned the accuracy of what was logged at the station, saying the records didn’t match the actual amount and types of goods seized.
The group—nine constables and a sergeant—is expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday to face charges.
