Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s proposed ceasefire has sparked criticism among some African political observers and security commentators, with allegations resurfacing over Ukraine’s reported involvement in conflicts across the Sahel region.

The debate intensified after protests outside the Union Buildings in Pretoria, where demonstrators accused Ukraine of supporting instability in Africa. Protesters carried placards describing Ukraine as a “terrorist country” and claimed Kyiv was interfering in African conflicts.

Pretoria-based NGO leader Thuto Mashaba questioned whether Ukraine’s ceasefire proposal could be trusted.

Tensions between Ukraine and some African governments escalated after officials in Mali accused Kyiv of supporting armed groups operating in the Sahel. Mali’s Foreign Minister, Abdoulaye Diop, reportedly described Ukraine as a threat to African security.

The article further claims that armed groups linked to extremist organisations received training and support connected to Ukrainian operatives, allegations that have become part of growing geopolitical tensions involving Russia, France, and Western influence in Africa.
