US special envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to meet Ukraine’s national security chief Rustem Umerov in Miami on Thursday, shortly after concluding nearly five hours of discussions with Russia’s president in Moscow earlier this week.

The talks in Russia, also attended by the US President’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, did not result in any compromise on ending the war. The US President described the meeting as “reasonably good,” but said it was still too early to predict any outcome, noting that “it takes two to tango.”

Ukraine’s foreign minister said Russia must “end the bloodshed” and accused Moscow of dragging out the conflict. When asked whether Putin seemed genuinely interested in ending the war, the US President said the envoys believed he did.

Ukraine’s president had already hinted that US–Ukraine discussions were expected soon, saying the world now sensed a “real opportunity” to bring the conflict closer to an end — but stressed that any negotiations must be backed with continued pressure on Russia.

During the Moscow talks, several US proposals were considered “more or less acceptable,” although others were sharply criticised. Major sticking points remain, including the status of Ukrainian territories currently occupied by Russian forces and long-term security guarantees for Ukraine.

Another major issue raised was Ukraine’s potential membership in NATO. Kyiv and European partners view NATO membership as the strongest protection against future attacks, but Russia opposes it and the US President has also signalled reluctance to support the move.

Russian officials suggested that their battlefield gains have strengthened their negotiating position. Despite ongoing fighting in key areas, they believe their recent advances have shaped how foreign partners view potential paths to peace.

The Kremlin signalled readiness for more meetings with US envoys, even as tensions between Russia and Europe continue to deepen. Russia accused European nations of obstructing the peace process and making demands Moscow views as unacceptable.

Meanwhile, European leaders have moved to reduce dependence on Russian gas, agreeing to end all long-term pipeline contracts by late 2027. The European Commission also proposed a large financial package to support Ukraine’s military and public services over the next two years, though some member states are hesitant about using frozen Russian assets to fund it.

Ukraine welcomed the funding plan, saying it would cover most of the country’s financial needs as the war continues.

At the United Nations, more than 90 countries urged Russia to return Ukrainian children who had been forcibly sent to Russian territory. Ukraine estimates that thousands of children have been taken since the start of the war.

A quiet Saturday morning in Kyiv turned tragic when Russian drones and missiles struck residential neighbourhoods, killing one person and injuring seven others. The blasts echoed across the capital, jolting families awake as fires broke out in several apartment buildings.

Authorities said a 13-year-old child was among the injured. Some victims were taken to hospital while emergency crews worked to control fires and pull survivors from damaged buildings. In the Sviatoshynskyi district, rescuers recovered the body of a man from the debris, while two women were reported injured in nearby Brovary.

The attack unfolded just days after a similar strike that left seven dead, adding to the growing anxiety in the capital. It also came at a critical moment, as Ukrainian officials prepared to meet US negotiators over a revised peace proposal.

Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, Russian forces continued to target residential areas. Kyiv’s military administration said multiple sites on the outskirts were hit, while air defence units fought off more incoming drones over the city.

The renewed bombardment landed against the backdrop of intense international discussions. Moscow has insisted that Ukraine withdraw from territories Russia claims, while negotiations between Ukraine and the United States continue over a draft peace plan that has undergone revisions.

Ukrainian leaders say they remain committed to talks that could secure peace and future safety guarantees, even as attacks on civilians persist.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says he is prepared to begin “honest work” with the United States after receiving a draft peace plan aimed at ending the war with Russia. The proposal, reported by several U.S. outlets, suggests that Ukraine may have to give up parts of the Donbas region it still controls, reduce the size of its military, and commit to never joining NATO.

It remains unclear how involved Ukraine was in shaping the plan, though U.S. officials insist they consulted “equally with both sides.” Zelensky’s office confirmed that Ukraine is willing to study the proposal and work on its details, emphasizing that any agreement must lead to a “just end to the war.”

Some elements of the draft appear to support Russia’s long-standing demands. Zelensky said he expects to discuss the plan directly with U.S. President Donald Trump in the coming days. The proposal reportedly also requires Ukraine to give up many of its weapons.

The White House pushed back on claims that the draft forces Ukraine into sweeping concessions, insisting that the plan is balanced and has the president’s full support. According to U.S. officials, the document was developed over the past month by senior diplomats after consultations with one of Zelensky’s top advisers, Rustem Umerov.

Zelensky acknowledged the U.S. proposal publicly, saying he shared Ukraine’s “key principles” with Washington and agreed that both sides would continue working together to ensure the process is credible.

The announcement came after a meeting in Kyiv between Zelensky and high-ranking American military leaders. Despite Ukraine’s cautious tone, Zelensky expressed appreciation for the U.S. administration’s efforts to restore security to Europe.

In his nightly address, he restated that Ukraine seeks a “worthy peace” that respects the country’s dignity and sovereignty. European leaders, however, seemed unaware of the plan’s development. The EU’s foreign policy chief said she had no knowledge of Europe being involved in drafting it, stressing that any successful peace initiative must include both Ukraine and its European partners.

Russia dismissed the reported plan, saying there were no real negotiations with the U.S. and warning that any lasting agreement must address what Moscow calls the “root causes” of the conflict—terms Ukraine has repeatedly rejected.

The UK also emphasized that Ukraine must retain control over its own future, warning that no peace can be imposed against its will.

President Trump has recently stepped up efforts to broker an end to the war, including holding a summit with Russia’s Vladimir Putin and dispatching envoys to Kyiv and Moscow. But as the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion approaches, the two sides remain deeply divided.

While Ukraine has intensified drone strikes on Russian military and energy targets, Russia continues deadly bombardments across Ukraine. Recent attacks in Zaporizhzhia and Ternopil killed dozens of civilians, adding new urgency to the search for a viable peace solution.

A deadly wave of Russian drone and missile strikes tore through Kyiv, leaving four people dead and injuring many more. President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attacks as deliberate and cruel, saying around 430 drones and 18 missiles were launched, damaging numerous high-rise buildings across the capital.

Kyiv’s energy network suffered heavy blows, cutting heat to some buildings and causing possible disruptions to electricity and water. Ukraine’s air force reported that several other regions across the country were also targeted during the night.

Meanwhile, inside Russia, the port city of Novorossiysk came under Ukrainian attack. A major fire erupted at the Sheskharis oil refinery, and both a ship and nearby apartment blocks were hit. Local officials confirmed that three crew members and one other person were injured, while the attack damaged the main oil depot and a container terminal. The city’s mayor declared a state of emergency, and oil exports were temporarily halted.

Back in Kyiv, officials said residential buildings were struck in nearly every district. Residents were urged to take shelter shortly after midnight as explosions echoed throughout the city. Falling debris sparked fires in multiple high-rise buildings, as well as a hospital, school and administrative offices.

Emergency teams rescued more than 40 people, including 14 pulled from a burning building in the Desnayanskyi district, where one person lost their life. Another survivor was found under rubble and brought to safety.

Medical crews were dispatched across the city, with several victims hospitalized—one in extremely critical condition. Parts of Kyiv’s heating system were damaged, raising concerns about more power and water outages.

Ukraine’s air force also warned that drones and guided bombs were targeting regions beyond Kyiv, including Sumy.

These strikes come less than a week after another Russian attack that killed six people and damaged both homes and vital energy facilities. Russia maintains that its ongoing assaults on energy infrastructure are aimed at weakening Ukraine’s military capabilities.

In response, President Zelensky renewed calls for stricter Western sanctions on Russian energy, insisting that no exceptions should be allowed.

The visit comes just a day after Trump’s phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which both leaders agreed to meet soon in Hungary. Trump described the conversation as “very productive” and said discussions would continue between US and Russian officials next week.

Zelensky said Moscow’s sudden interest in dialogue showed how seriously it takes the possibility of Ukraine receiving long-range missiles. While Trump initially signaled he was considering the request, he later said the US could not afford to “deplete” its missile stockpile.

The developments add complexity to Zelensky’s trip, as Trump attempts to maintain a delicate balance between supporting Ukraine and pursuing peace talks with Russia.

Meanwhile, Russia carried out one of its largest attacks of the year on Ukraine just hours before the Trump-Putin call, launching dozens of missiles and drones. Ukrainian officials said the strikes prove that Moscow is still focused on aggression, not peace.

As diplomatic maneuvers continue, Trump is expected to brief Zelensky on his recent discussion with Putin and outline the next steps in Washington’s approach to ending the war.

Ukraine has suffered one of its most symbolic attacks since the war began, as a key government building in central Kyiv was damaged during an overnight Russian missile and drone barrage.

The Cabinet of Ministers building, home to many of the country’s top officials, sustained damage to its roof and upper floors, igniting a fire that firefighters worked for hours to control. Until now, central government buildings in Kyiv had been largely spared, making the strike a powerful signal to residents.

Across Ukraine, at least four people were killed, including a young woman and her baby when a residential tower was struck in Kyiv’s Svyatoshynsky district. Several others were injured as apartment blocks in the Svyatoshynsky and Darnytskyi districts were partially destroyed.

Ukraine’s air force said Russia launched an unprecedented wave of missiles and drones, with wreckage falling across multiple sites. Explosions and fires were reported in Zaporizhzhia, Kryvyi Rih, Odesa, and the Sumy and Chernihiv regions.

President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the assault, calling it “a deliberate crime and an attempt to prolong the war,” and renewed calls for greater international resolve to halt the attacks.

Residents described terrifying moments as blasts shattered windows and set homes ablaze. Valentina, who lives in one of the damaged Kyiv apartment buildings, said she and her husband were asleep when the strike struck their flat. “At least we’re alive,” she said, mourning the loss of her young neighbor and her baby.

Ukrainian footballer Georgiy Sudakov revealed that his Kyiv apartment was also hit by a drone strike while his wife and children were inside, though he did not confirm if they were injured.

In Zaporizhzhia, a strike injured at least 17 people and damaged a nursery and several homes. Outside the city, a woman was killed and a man reported missing after a Russian glide bomb hit Novopavlivka. Additional deaths were reported in the Sumy and Chernihiv regions.

Russia said it targeted Ukraine’s military-industrial sites and transport infrastructure. At the same time, Ukrainian forces launched drone attacks inside Russia, damaging part of the Druzhba oil pipeline in the Bryansk region, according to Ukrainian officials. Russian authorities claimed to have downed 69 Ukrainian drones but reported civilian casualties in Belgorod.

The escalation comes days after Western allies discussed new security commitments to Ukraine, while Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed those talks and warned that any foreign troops sent to Ukraine would be treated as “legitimate targets.”

For many in Kyiv, seeing the government district hit for the first time is deeply unsettling—a stark reminder that even the capital’s heart remains vulnerable as the war grinds on.

Ukraine marked its Independence Day with a mix of celebration, defiance, and reflection, as President Volodymyr Zelensky vowed the country would continue to fight for its freedom.

In his address, Zelensky declared that Ukraine seeks “a just peace, one where our future will be decided only by us.” He added that while victory has not yet been achieved, Ukraine “has certainly not lost.”

The speech came as tensions remained high following reports of overnight drone attacks on Russian energy facilities. Moscow accused Ukraine of sparking a fire at a nuclear plant in the Kursk region, but Kyiv dismissed the claims as propaganda. The fire was quickly extinguished, and radiation levels were reported to be normal.

Amid the conflict, a prisoner swap brought relief to many families. Each side released 146 captives, including Ukrainian soldiers, civilians, and a journalist held since 2022.

In Kyiv, Independence Day ceremonies carried both solemnity and pride. President Zelensky, alongside his wife, laid flowers in memory of fallen Ukrainians. Canada’s Prime Minister attended the events, pledging continued support and announcing fresh deliveries of drones, armored vehicles, and ammunition. Other allies, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Norway, and Sweden, reaffirmed their commitment through military aid and defense cooperation.

Ordinary Ukrainians also gathered at makeshift memorials across the country, honoring those who lost their lives in the war. Blue and yellow flags waved in the capital as servicemen raised the national flag to mark the occasion. Messages of solidarity poured in from world leaders, including King Charles, who praised the “unbreakable spirit of the Ukrainian people.”

While the day was filled with tributes and pledges of support, the war’s reality remained clear. Russia claimed new gains in eastern Ukraine, and peace efforts showed little progress despite international pressure. Talks between global leaders have so far failed to produce a breakthrough, with disagreements over conditions for a ceasefire.

For Ukraine, Independence Day was a reminder of both its hard-fought past and the uncertain road ahead. As Zelensky told the nation: Ukraine is not a victim, but a fighter — determined to secure its future on its own terms.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russia of prolonging the war by refusing repeated calls for a ceasefire. He said the lack of commitment from Moscow makes it far harder to bring the fighting to an end.

Zelensky is set to travel to Washington, where President Donald Trump has promised to press him toward accepting a peace deal. Trump, fresh from his summit with Vladimir Putin, has said he wants to move directly to a permanent peace agreement rather than a temporary ceasefire, arguing that ceasefires often collapse.

After speaking with Trump, Zelensky stressed that peace must be lasting and genuine, outlining conditions such as strong security guarantees and the return of Ukrainian children taken from occupied areas.

Reports suggest that during the summit, Putin proposed Ukraine withdraw from the Donetsk region in exchange for Russia freezing its advance in Zaporizhzhia and Kherson. Trump relayed the idea to Zelensky, though Kyiv has made clear it will not give up territory, warning that doing so would invite future aggression.

The talks have unsettled some European leaders, who fear Trump may pressure Ukraine into concessions. Ahead of the summit, Trump had threatened severe sanctions if Moscow did not agree to a ceasefire, but the meeting ended without a formal agreement.

Still, both Trump and Putin described the discussions as productive. Putin called the summit “useful” and said it was important to address the root causes of the conflict, while Trump told reporters that the best advice for Zelensky was to “make a deal.”

European leaders, meanwhile, have urged further negotiations involving Ukraine, insisting that any peace settlement must respect international borders. In Kyiv, many Ukrainians reacted with frustration to the warm reception Putin received in Alaska, with some saying it felt like their suffering was being overlooked.

As Zelensky prepares for talks in Washington, the focus remains on whether the push for peace can deliver more than words — and whether it can bring an end to the war without forcing Ukraine to surrender its land.

Mass protests have broken out in cities across Ukraine after President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a new law that shifts control of key anti-corruption institutions to the prosecutor general — a move many believe threatens the independence of the agencies.

The law gives the prosecutor general authority over the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP), two institutions that have been central to Ukraine’s fight against corruption for nearly a decade. Critics say this change could allow politically influenced interference in investigations, undermine accountability, and stall progress in the country’s efforts to join the European Union.

Speaking after signing the bill, Zelensky defended the decision by arguing that Ukraine’s anti-corruption agencies had become ineffective and were vulnerable to Russian infiltration. He stressed that clearing out such influence was necessary for national security and institutional reform.

However, the reaction among Ukrainians was swift and vocal. In Kyiv, hundreds took to the streets in what has become the largest anti-government protest since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Demonstrations also erupted in Lviv, Dnipro, and Odesa, with citizens carrying signs that read “We chose Europe, not autocracy” and “My father did not die for this.”

The president’s move gives Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko — a trusted ally — the power to reassign or even close corruption cases. Zelensky has accused the anti-corruption bodies of allowing high-value investigations to stall for years, saying urgent reform is needed to ensure “the inevitability of punishment.”

But many see this as a betrayal of Ukraine’s democratic aspirations, hard-won since the Euromaidan protests and the ousting of a pro-Russian president in 2014. Anti-corruption institutions were created under international supervision, and their independence was a key condition for Western aid and closer integration with Europe.

The law’s passing comes shortly after arrests of alleged Russian spies within NABU — a move the government used to justify the changes. Still, the decision has sparked concern among Ukraine’s allies, especially the European Union, which emphasized that continued financial and political support is dependent on judicial transparency and democratic governance.

EU officials have warned that dismantling safeguards around NABU’s independence represents a significant step backward. Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration insists core functions of the agencies remain untouched and that the country’s commitment to anti-corruption remains firm.

Former foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba publicly criticized the move, calling it a “bad day for Ukraine” and warning that the president is at a crossroads: to stand with the people or move away from democratic principles.

Despite growing tensions, Western nations are unlikely to reduce support while Ukraine continues to face immense pressure on the battlefield. However, many are calling for urgent dialogue with Ukrainian leadership to address concerns and safeguard the country’s democratic future.

In Kyiv alone, residents woke to the sound of drones and missiles overhead. The Ukrainian air force said 250 drones and 14 ballistic missiles were launched at the capital in the overnight barrage. Fires broke out in apartment buildings, and at least 14 people were wounded in the city.

“With every strike, the world sees more clearly that the responsibility for this ongoing war lies with Moscow,” President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on social media platform X.

Zelensky described the night as “difficult” — full of fear, smoke, and devastation. Entire families were forced to flee their homes. In one heartbreaking account, 64-year-old Kyiv resident Olha Chyrukha tearfully told reporters: “I wish they’d agree to a ceasefire. To bomb people like this—poor children. My three-year-old granddaughter was screaming in fear.”

Tragically, four people died in the eastern Donetsk region, five more in the southern regions of Odesa and Kherson, and another four in the northeastern city of Kharkiv. Many were caught in their homes or near the wreckage of collapsed buildings.

Military officials say the attacks show Russia is refining its tactics—using swarms of drones followed closely by missiles to outsmart Ukraine’s defenses. “The enemy is evolving,” said Kyiv’s military chief Timur Tkachenko.

Despite the pain, hope flickered through the darkness. A long-awaited prisoner swap between Russia and Ukraine finally took place. Over the weekend, 307 Ukrainian captives were released and returned home, following a larger exchange on Friday where both countries swapped 390 prisoners each — the biggest such deal since the war began in 2022.

More exchanges are expected soon, with each side agreeing to release up to 1,000 prisoners.

Meanwhile, international voices continue to weigh in. Former U.S. President Donald Trump hinted that the recent prisoner swaps might be a sign of bigger negotiations to come. He claimed he had a call with Russian President Vladimir Putin and said talks for a ceasefire could “start immediately”—although no such move has yet been confirmed by the Kremlin.

Back on the ground, Ukrainians are left picking up the pieces—physically and emotionally. In one photo, a man stands silently outside his shattered apartment building, clutching his dog. The rubble around him says it all.

For now, the promise of peace still feels painfully out of reach.
