Botswana’s sprint star Letsile Tebogo has booked his place in the men’s 200-meter semi-finals at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

On Wednesday, the Olympic champion clocked 20.18 seconds to finish second in his heat behind reigning world champion Noah Lyles. While the result was enough to secure safe passage, Tebogo wasn’t fully satisfied with his performance.

Running from lane nine, he admitted struggling with his form around the curve and described the race as “terrible” despite the strong finish.

After crossing the line, Tebogo lightened the mood with a playful jog and a few jokes, later explaining it was his way of shaking off the disappointment of missing out on the 100m final earlier in the week due to a false start. The two-day break, he said, left his body feeling flat.

A Stronger Performance Ahead

Looking ahead to Thursday’s semi-finals and the Friday final, the 22-year-old promised a much sharper run.

“The curve will be a lot better from me,” Tebogo said with confidence. “It’s going to look very different.”

The Tokyo crowd may well see a return of the explosive form that carried him to Olympic gold in Paris last year. With his determination and unfinished business on the track, Tebogo has made it clear he’s aiming for the podium once again.

EUGENE – Armand Duplantis wrapped up the World Athletics Championships in Eugene in beautiful style on Sunday, setting a brand new world document within the pole vault because the curtain got here down on the 10-day international monitor and area extravaganza.

The gripping finale couldn’t have been any higher scripted for the primary world championships ever to be held on American soil – aside from the very fact possibly that the US-born and raised Duplantis was sporting the yellow and blue of Sweden and never representing the Stars and Stripes.

As the livid hullaboo of the frenzied 4x400m relays received by the US women and men died down, all eyes turned on Duplantis.

And the 22-year-old Swede didn’t disappoint, crusing with ease over 6.21 metres at the second time of asking.

The packed, raucous crowd at Hayward Field went wild as Duplantis sprinted to see his father and coach Greg and plant a kiss on girlfriend Desire Inglander.

“It is great, I cannot complain!” mentioned Duplantis, whose new mark bettered by 1cm his earlier finest set when successful gold at the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade in March.

It was his fifth world document, and third this yr.

“Actually, I did not think about the record that much today,” he mentioned.

“Usually, it is always somewhere in the back of my mind but today, I was really focused on the win and I really wanted to win the gold so badly. It was the medal I was missing.

“I like leaping in Eugene and it was wonderful right here. I can’t determine the subsequent heights proper now. I’m going to have a bit break day with my household and my associates.”

RECORD FOR AMUSAN

Unheralded Nigerian Tobi Amusan had earlier stolen the show with two electric runs on her way to gold in the 100m hurdles.

In the very first event of a loaded evening of track, people had barely had chance to sit down with their sodas and popcorn before Amusan rocketed to a new world record of 12.12 seconds in the semi-finals.

When she retook to the track later in the session, the Nigerian stormed to victory in 12.06sec, although a tailwind speed of 2.5 metres per second meant it wouldn’t go down in the freshly-inked record books.

“The objective was to return out and to win this gold. I simply did it,” said Amusan, who finished ahead of Jamaica’s Britany Anderson and Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico.

“I imagine in my talents however I used to be not anticipating a world document at these championships.”

American Athing Mu lived up to her hype by adding the world 800m title to her Olympic crown.

Mu, still only 20 years of age, was forced to dig deep to hold off British rival Keeley Hodgkinson in a thrilling battle down the final straight before taking gold in a world-leading 1min 56.30sec.

“I’m simply glad I made it to the road to complete the race, and fortunately I received gold. I simply bodily wasn’t the place I want to be,” Mu said.

Another gold medallist from last year’s Tokyo Olympics, Malaika Mihambo, won Germany a long-awaited medal as she retained her world long jump title.

But Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei floundered in a 5000m race won convincingly by Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who bounced back from the disappointment of silver in the 1500m.

“I did not desire a dash end,” Ingebrigtsen said. “I needed to show that I’m a greater runner than the remainder of the fellows.

“It was a great race. I ran it, I needed it. I felt really good today, but 5km is really tough.”

In the absence by harm of Olympic champion Damian Warner of Canada, France’s Kevin Mayer seized the second to assert a second world decathlon gold.

Mayer accrued 8,816 factors after 10 disciplines over two days to comply with up on earlier world gold in 2017 in London.

Consolidating their place atop the medals desk with a world championship document of 33 (13 gold, 9 silver, 11 bronze), the United States claimed emphatic victories in each 4x400m relay finals, a lot to the delight of the partisan crowd.

Strength in depth noticed record-breaking 400m hurdles gold medallist Sydney McLaughlin anchor the ladies and particular person 400m winner Michael Norman take a leg for the boys’s quartet.

The girls’s victory meant the now-retired Allyson Felix bagged a twentieth world medal as she was a squad member who ran in Saturday’s heats.

EUGENE – Kenyan-born Norah Jeruto gained world gold for Kazakhstan within the girls’s 3000m steeplechase on Wednesday whereas China’s Feng Bin threw a large private finest to assert the discus title.

While day 5 of motion at Hayward Field featured solely two finals, South African heavyweights Caster Semenya and Wayde van Niekerk have been trackside together with 400m hurdles stars Sydney McLaughlin and Dalilah Muhammad in a collection of high-calibre heats and semi-finals.

Jeruto clocked the third quickest time in historical past and a championship document of 8min 53.02sec for the steeplechase victory in Eugene, with Ethiopian Werkuha Getachew claiming silver in a nationwide document of 8:54.61.

A second Ethiopian, Mekides Abebe, made essentially the most of a mistake by Kenyan-born Bahraini Winfred Mutile Yavi on the ultimate water barrier, to grab bronze (8:56.08).

The discus was all however over after the primary spherical as Feng threw 69.12m on her opening go to to the ring, enhancing by greater than three metres her earlier better of 66.00m set in Beijing in April.

Croatia’s Sandra Perkovic, a two-time Olympic champion and in addition twice a world gold medallist, claimed silver with 68.45m. American Valarie Allman, who gained Olympic gold on the Tokyo Games, took bronze with 68.30m.

Semenya’s first look in a world championships in 5 years noticed the controversy-mired South African fail to qualify for the ladies’s 5000m finals.

‘COOKING’ CASTER

In roasting mid-afternoon temperatures, the two-time Olympic gold medallist completed thirteenth within the first of two rounds in 15:46.12, greater than 45sec off the fifteenth and closing qualifying place.

“Cooking!” stated Semenya, who was compelled to modify from her favoured 800m (by which she can also be a former three-time champion) to the longer occasion resulting from gender eligibility guidelines that required her to take testosterone-reducing medication to compete in races between 400m to a mile post-race.

“It was hot, I could not keep up with the pace, I tried to stick as much as I can, but you know, it is a part of the game.

“I believe it’s nice to have the ability to run right here,” she added. “Just having the ability to end the 5k, for me it’s a blessing. I’m studying and I’m prepared to be taught much more.”

Her time was far off the heat-winning 14:52.64 set by Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay, fresh from her silver in the 1500m.

Semenya’s teammate Wayde van Niekerk qualified for the final of the men’s 400m after finishing second in his semi-final in 44.75sec.

Van Niekerk set the world record of 43.03sec when winning Olympic gold in Rio, but then sustained a nasty knee injury that saw him sit out track for three years.

“It is the problem of doing this 400m and never having as many races in my legs as I might like to have by now,” he acknowledged.

“But I made it by way of and I felt comfy for almost all of the race. So it’s about recovering now and preparing for the ultimate.”

Van Niekerk added: “It is a studying course of in each race. I’m listening to my physique and executing that manner.

“It has been a challenging three years and now, I just want to come out and do my best. I need to be back with every step I take to be able to challenge my record.”

US one-lap medal hope Michael Norman topped qualifying occasions for what must be an ultra-competitive closing on Friday.

Elsewhere, Sydney McLaughlin underscored her standing as favorite so as to add a world gold to her Olympic 400m hurdles crown as she motored right into a closing showdown with USA team-mate and defending champion Dalilah Muhammad.

“It’s going to be a great race, I know that for sure,” stated McLaughlin.

Finally, there was dangerous information for the US males’s 4x100m relay crew as newly-crowned 100m champion Fred Kerley was dominated out of motion.

Kerley was identified with a “slight injury to his quad” within the semi-finals of the 200m, from which he did not advance.

EUGENE – Alison Dos Santos ended Karsten Warholm’s reign as hurdles king on the world championships on Tuesday whereas Britain’s Jake Wightman received his nation’s first 1500m gold in 39 years on a day of upsets.

Warholm could have been behind some of the iconic moments in Olympic historical past when he smashed the 29-year-old world document to win the 400m hurdles on the Tokyo Games in a time of 45.94sec.

But the 26-year-old got here to Eugene on the again of a hamstring harm which in the end put paid to his medal try right here.

Instead, Dos Santos ran the third quickest time of all time and a championship document of 46.29sec to win gold forward of Americans Rai Benjamin and Trevor Bassitt.

“It’s pretty awesome to win the world title on this track. I didn’t care about the time because this is the first time I win a world title,” mentioned Dos Santos.

Warholm led coming into the house straight however seized up badly and ultimately got here in seventh (48.42), breaking a profitable streak of twenty-two races, together with 18 finals, relationship again to September 2018.

“It was a very tough race,” Warholm mentioned. “I had an injury but to me it’s always your fight and giving your all and leaving it all on the track.

“I felt I did that. I hope trying again I’ll really feel happy with that despite the fact that I favor to take a medal.”

Whilst everyone knew Warholm was coming back from injury, serious hopes were pinned on Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen in the men’s 1500m.

But Wightman had not read the script, playing the Norwegian at his own game by kicking with 200 metres to run and holding his form through to the line.

Wightman sealed victory in 3min 29.23sec, Ingebrigtsen taking silver in 3:29.47, with Spaniard Mohamed Katir claiming bronze (3:29.90).

FAMILY AFFAIR

In a bizarre twist, Wightman’s father Geoff is in Eugene doing the in-stadium commentary.

Geoff, also his son’s coach, was reduced to a cracked voice as he announced to Hayward Field: “That’s my son and he is world champion.”

“For him to be a part of my journey to get up to now, and truly half of the particular race itself is so distinctive,” Wightman said of his father.

“I talked to him and he is very joyful. I’m glad he confirmed some emotion.”

Following on from Norway’s Olympic gold medallists in failing to nail a world title was 2019 champion Daniel Stahl, the Swede eventually finishing fourth in the discus.

Australian Eleanor Patterson won high jump gold in the fourth final of the night with 2.02m on countback from Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh, Italian Elena Vallortigara taking bronze.

“I’m actually speechless proper now,” Patterson said afterwards. “I’m already beginning to get sore cheeks from smiling.”

KERLEY OUT OF 200M

Day five of action at the world champs also saw newly-crowned 100m champion Fred Kerley fail to advance from the semi-finals of the 200m.

Kerley set off smoothly from the blocks but was left grimacing as he hit the home straight at Eugene’s Hayward Field, eventually finishing sixth in 20.68 seconds.

Kerley later said he had cramped up in the later stages of the race, but insisted he would be fit to race in the relays.

“Bit of cramp, but it surely’s all good,” Kerley said. “I’m not in ache, I’ll be good.”

While Kerley was left digesting a disappointing early exit, there have been no such worries for defending 200m world champion Noah Lyles, who romped residence in his semi-final with a blistering 19.62sec.

The predominant menace to Lyles’ hopes of retaining his 200m world title could properly come from teenage team-mate and rising rival Erriyon Knighton. The 18-year-old prodigy blazed residence to win his semi-final in 19.77sec.

In the ladies’s 200m, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce saved her bid for a dash double on monitor as she sailed into the ultimate.

Fresh from profitable a document fifth world 100m title, Fraser-Pryce timed a season’s better of 21.83 seconds within the third of three semi-finals.

Joining the 35-year-old, a world 200m champion in 2013, in Thursday’s ultimate shall be her two teammates who helped snatch an unprecedented cleansweep of the 100m podium for Jamaica on Sunday, Shericka Jackson and Elaine Thompson-Herah.

Alongside the trio of Jamaicans within the ultimate shall be Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith, the reigning world 200m champion who was fourth within the 100m, Americans Abby Steiner and Tamara Clark, Niger’s Aminatou Seyni and Switzerland’s Mujinga Kambundji.
