Singer and Social Activist Rainym Uses Her Music to Fight GBV in South Africa

JOHANNESBURG Rainym, a Soweto born RnB singer and social activist, is set to release her highly anticipated new single on Friday, placing her voice firmly at the centre of the fight against gender based violence in South Africa.

The upcoming release reflects her lived experiences and delivers a message of resilience, empowerment and social responsibility at a time when South Africa continues to battle alarming levels of gender based violence and femicide.

Raised in White City, Jabavu and later in Meadowlands Zone 9 in Soweto, Rainym says her upbringing shaped both her musical identity and her passion for activism.

“Growing up in Soweto profoundly shaped my character. It instilled resilience in me and gave me the courage to navigate different cultures and environments. My music connects my roots in Soweto with global audiences,” she said.

Her sound blends contemporary RnB with strong South African influences. She draws inspiration from soulful vocalists and lyricists who transform personal struggles into powerful anthems of hope. Rainym says her music reflects the realities of township life while speaking to universal themes of healing and self worth.

Beyond the studio, Rainym is an active advocate against gender based violence. She joined the Black Womxn Caucus in 2019, a feminist social movement focused on combating GBV and femicide across South Africa.

Her recently released single titled Do Something directly addresses the urgent need for communities to confront abuse, silence and complicity.

“The song highlights the pressing need for awareness and action. Music can be more than entertainment. It can challenge society and push people to act,” she said.

The project features production by Izzy, whose creative direction complements Rainym’s emotive vocal style. Together they have crafted melodies that combine poignant storytelling with accessible rhythms designed to connect with young listeners.

As gender based violence remains one of South Africa’s most urgent social crises, artists such as Rainym are increasingly using their platforms to advocate for accountability, justice and healing. Her latest release adds a strong cultural voice to a national issue that continues to dominate public discourse.

With the single set for release on Friday, Rainym hopes the message will resonate far beyond Soweto and inspire meaningful conversations across the country.

“I want people to feel seen, heard and empowered. If my music encourages even one person to speak out or seek help, then it has done its job,” she said.

Her work reflects a growing movement of South African creatives who are turning art into activism and using their influence to drive awareness and social change.

What was meant to be a breakthrough year for Soweto-based designer Hlumelo Nyaluza took an unexpected turn when he discovered that a tiny comma error on his website had cost him millions of rands in lost revenue over an eight-month period.

The Eastern Cape–born creative, who rose from building apps to designing luxury bags, had watched his work capture global attention within a single week — with features in New York, Miami, Australia, Mexico, London and several other major cities. His dream was unfolding faster than he ever imagined… until a technical glitch quietly swallowed his momentum.

But instead of giving up, Nyaluza is bouncing back with renewed purpose.

Afro-Soul sensation La’ Sauce Releases a Women Empowerment Anthem Against GBV

Afro-Soul singing sensation La’ Sauce, who has been absent from the music is now the Gender Based Violence (GBV) activist.

Real name Sindisiwe Dlamini, Singer and Songwriter, LaSauce is back and she is now the gender based violence activist after being absent from the music scene for years.

Known for her hit songs “Emafini,” “Ncese” and the popular sing along “I Do” where she is featuring Amanda Black, La Sauce is back on the music scene with an anthem against Gender Based Violence (GBV) and advocating the empowerment of women.

Her latest single titled Imbokodo’ celebrates the ferocity of women and speaks out against the rising scourge of gender-based violence.

It was for released on 25 November which coincided with the national annual “16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children.

The song features one of the country’s legends Yvonne Chaka-Chaka. Another notable feature in the song is vocal poet and podcaster Ntsiki Mazwai who lends her poetic skills in a moving poem complementing La’ Sauce’s sultry voice.

She said that the song is to remind women of the power they have and not to give up in their fight, “just like the generation that marched back then did.”

La Sauce said that she believed that ‘Imbokodo’ is “not a come a come-back song”.

“I hadn’t left at all. I took a break to learn more about the industry and to set up Ubuntu Foundation, which is a vehicle that I use for one of my passions – women empowerment. The work I have been doing, what I have learned and the song had to come together at some point. The universe spoke. One cannot say I am on a comeback because my online listenership is to this day in the region of six figures,” she said.

La Sauce said that the single forms part of an EP that she will be unpacking in phases to her fans who have been asking her for more music.

“Fans can rest assured of a classic La’ Sauce gem “that I am proud to share with the world. I have put so much work into this project and I can’t wait to have it out there,” she said.

La Sauce sultry features ballads as well as a “new sound,” and is produced by Vuyo Manike and Ruff1020 who is a partner of Sjava at the 1020 Cartel.

“What is set to get the spotlight on the song is the ‘elephant in the room,” the feature of Mazwai. Given the fact that the theme for this year’s campaign is “UNITE to End Digital Violence against All Women and Girls,” Mazwai feature and voice brings more relevance as she has and continues to be the victim of online violence.

Women innovators, business leaders, and policymakers from across the continent gathered in Cape Town for the 11th Africa Women Innovation and Entrepreneurship Forum (AWIEF), a two-day event dedicated to strengthening the role of women in Africa’s economic future.

Held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, the conference brought together entrepreneurs, investors, and development partners under the theme “Breaking the Barriers: Now More Than Ever.” The atmosphere was driven by connection, collaboration, and a shared commitment to helping women build and grow successful enterprises.

Dr. Fatima Elsheikh, Secretary General of the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa, delivered an uplifting keynote that set the pace for the event. She encouraged African women to lead boldly and embrace innovation as a driver of sustainable development, highlighting AWIEF as a platform that amplifies women’s influence across the continent.

South Africa’s Deputy Minister for Small Business Development, Jane Sithole, praised the forum for its ongoing work in strengthening small businesses and creating opportunities for women. She noted that empowering women ultimately strengthens national and regional economies.

Monique Shurray White, CEO of I.M.A.G.E.S. Media Group in the United States, urged participants to embrace their talents and leadership potential, reminding them that recognition and empowerment go hand-in-hand.

Throughout the event, attendees engaged in high-impact workshops and panels covering topics such as the future of work in the era of AI, accessing capital for women-owned businesses, Africa’s green transition, and harnessing regional trade opportunities through the AfCFTA. Mentorship sessions and business development masterclasses further equipped participants with tools to scale their ventures.

AWIEF Founder and CEO Irene Ochem highlighted the organisation’s continued commitment to supporting women in business. Over the past 11 years, AWIEF has grown into one of Africa’s most influential platforms for women’s economic advancement, dedicated to breaking systemic barriers and creating access to opportunities.
