A Chinese national was arrested in Eerste River, Western Cape, on Tuesday after police uncovered suspected counterfeit alcohol worth an estimated R3.5 million during a major raid.

The operation, conducted under “Operation Prosper,” involved a multi-agency task team comprising the SAPS Counterfeit Unit, the Liquor Authority, SARS, and the SANDF.

Authorities believe the illicit alcohol was intended for export.
Police raided a liquor store in the area and seized 6,201 litres of various alcoholic products believed to be counterfeit.

The shop owner, a Chinese national, was arrested at the scene and is currently being held at Kleinvlei Police Station. He is expected to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court once formal charges are finalised.

The bust forms part of ongoing crackdowns on counterfeit goods in the Western Cape.

Police have warned that counterfeit alcohol poses serious health risks to consumers.

A 32-year-old man who allegedly impregnated an 11-year-old girl is expected to appear in the Atlantis Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
The suspect was arrested on Friday, 15 May.
Western Cape police spokesperson, Captain Frederick van Wyk, confirmed that a warrant had been issued for the suspect’s arrest.
“This office can confirm that a 32-year-old man was arrested on Friday, 15 May, on a warrant of arrest. He will appear in the Atlantis Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 18 May,” said Van Wyk.
This comes after Atlantis residents expressed outrage following revelations that the 11-year-old girl gave birth about a week ago, allegedly due to sexual abuse involving a person known to the family.
The child’s mother was also arrested and has already appeared in the Atlantis Magistrate’s Court.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed her court appearance. NPA spokesperson, Eric Ntabazalila, verified the development.
“Yes, we can confirm that the mother of the 11-year-old child appeared in the Atlantis Magistrate’s Court on a charge of failing to report the commission of a sexual offence,” Ntabazalila said.
The case against the mother has been postponed to Tuesday, 19 May.

The 42-year-old parolee and convicted serial murder accused, Ayanda Dayi, was sentenced to four life imprisonment terms by the Wynberg Regional Court in the Western Cape on Tuesday for the murder of four men in separate incidents.

This sentencing follows the hard work and commitment of the investigating officers, Detective Lieutenant Colonel Adrian Pretorius and Detective Warrant Officer Bradley Davids.

Dayi will be remembered to be part of the gang that robbed a Sasko Bread Truck in Delt in May 2024.

According to police reports, in addition to the four life sentences, Dayi was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances, three separate 15-year imprisonment terms for illegal possession of firearms, four years’ imprisonment for illegal possession of ammunition, and 10 years’ imprisonment for attempted murder.

The accused was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

One of the murder incidents that shocked the nation was captured in a social media video clip. In the footage, three Sasko bread employees were seen travelling in a truck to deliver bread to a spaza shop in Delft along Symphony Way on 16 May 2024.

The accused and his co-accused were shown shooting at the victims, despite the victims appearing to surrender.

Earlier that same year, Dayi committed a double murder in Dunoon, where he shot and killed two men before hijacking their vehicle.

Dayi had previously been convicted of rape and sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment in August 2002. He was on parole when he committed the four murder offences.

The Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General (Adv) Thembisile Patekile, commended the investigating and prosecution teams for ensuring that justice was served.
