The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry is expected to deliver a written judgment on Monday regarding a request by ANC member and North West businessman Suleiman Carrim to testify in camera.

Carrim’s application has sparked a major controversy ahead of his scheduled testimony before the Commission.

His legal team argues that appearing in a public hearing could place his life at risk. They maintain that Carrim and his family have been subjected to threats, forcing him to spend significant amounts of money on private security.

However, the Commission has disputed claims that Carrim was left without protection.

During proceedings, evidence leader Advocate Adila Hassim told the Commission that Carrim had previously been offered protection services but declined them.

Hassim raised the issue in response to Carrim’s claim that he has had to cover the costs of private security himself due to safety concerns.

Carrim’s lawyer, Advocate Kameel Premhid, argued that the request for in-camera proceedings is based on ongoing threats against Carrim and his family. According to Premhid, these threats include warnings that Carrim’s businesses could be burned down and that his family could be tracked even if they relocate.

The legal team told the Commission that the threats have created a serious risk to Carrim’s safety should his testimony take place in a public hearing.

Carrim is not new to controversy and has been linked to several allegations connected to a cancelled R360 million South African Police Service (SAPS) tender.

He is accused of receiving R1.5 million from controversial businessman Vusimuzi Matlala, who has been linked to the tender scandal.

Carrim has also been associated with suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, with reports of WhatsApp messages exchanged between Mchunu, Matlala and Carrim emerging during the course of investigations.

Carrim’s legal team had previously challenged the subpoena issued by the Commission in court but lost the case. They later secured a postponement of his appearance from an earlier date to 9 and 10 March, citing the need for additional preparation time.

On Friday, Carrim’s lawyers filed an interlocutory application requesting that his testimony be heard privately.

During the hearing, Commission chairperson Justice Mbuyiseni Madlanga expressed concern about the wording used in Carrim’s affidavit. Madlanga said the language appeared to suggest that the Commission had been responsible for the deaths of witnesses.

The Commissioner described this suggestion as serious and inappropriate, especially given the sensitive context of previous witness deaths linked to investigations, including Witness D and Wiandre Pretorius.

Madlanga also noted that previous applications for in-camera testimony had been dealt with openly and questioned what made Carrim’s situation different enough to justify secrecy.

He indicated that the Commission would need to carefully consider whether the application meets the legal threshold for private proceedings.

Evidence leader Sesi Baloyi also opposed Carrim’s request, arguing that he had not provided sufficient grounds to justify testifying behind closed doors.

Baloyi further argued that keeping the alleged threats confidential could prevent full public disclosure and undermine transparency in the Commission’s work.

She added that the application may have already been compromised by information that has entered the public domain.

The Commission is expected to release its written ruling on Monday, which will determine whether Carrim will testify in a public hearing or behind closed doors when he appears before the Madlanga Commission.

Sibiya dropped this bomb after he had asked the Madlanga Commission to play a recording where he is facing cross examination at Madlanga Commission.

Sibiya further said that the company that paid for Senthumule’s BBL was Meducare 24 which is the company owned businessman by Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

From the morning l, it seemed as if Sibiya does not want to go down alone when he revealed Senthumele’s alleged links with Matlala.

“It has been alleged that General Senthumule personally benefited from Matlala in circumstances that were not disclosed. These allegations include certain medical procedures, the cost of which were paid for by Matlala. I am advised that these benefits were not declared through any formal disclosure. I think we , we had a witness F here that spoke about some senior SAPS senior managers who recieved BBL,” he said.

Sibiya said that there were reasoning he was revealing all of this is because of a statement he made about him to SAPS National Commissioner Lieutenant General Fanie Masemola.

“A further point of concern for me is that General Senthumule has publicly denied having a an association with Matlala. This denial is however difficult to reconcile with information that has come to my attention in particular, it appears that Matlala was invited on the instruction of Senthumule to attend SAPS Service Excellence Awards and that the donation was accepted from this company Medicare24 in connection with that event. I am in possession of a WhatsApp communication which indicate that General Senthumule instructed General Manamela to extend an invitation to attend the Service Excellence Awards,” he said.

It further emerged that Matlala donated 10 fridges during the event.

It will be revealed that Brigadier Rachel Matjeng had earlier revealed she knew colleagues who’d had BBLs, but didn’t say who funded them.

Now Sibiya has put Senthumule front and center in the shocking commission testimony.

Witness F has been hospitalised, forcing a dramatic postponement at the Madlanga Commission as explosive allegations continue to shake South Africa’s criminal justice system.

Proceedings at the Madlanga Commission were briefly disrupted after the SAPS organised crime unit member submitted a medical note confirming hospitalisation. His testimony has now been rescheduled for the final day of hearings.

The commission has heard shocking claims involving suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya, alleged “Big 5” cartel leader Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, private security boss Steve Motshumi, Pretoria taxi boss Jothan Zanemvila known as King Mswazi, and senior Hawks officials.

Serious allegations of corruption, political interference, and infiltration of criminal networks into law enforcement structures continue to unfold. The fallout has extended to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department, where senior officials including former city manager Imogen Mashazi and suspended EMPD chief Julius Mkhwanazi face scrutiny over controversial agreements and alleged misconduct.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has established a special investigative task team following recommendations emerging from the commission.

The final day of hearings could prove decisive.

The Johannesburg High Court has postponed the pre trial hearing of alleged crime boss Vusimuzi Cat Matlala and his four co accused to 6 February 2026, granting additional time for legal consultations and arguments around his detention location.

Matlala, who faces multiple attempted murder and related charges together with his wife Tsakane Matlala, is currently being held at eBongweni Super Maximum Correctional Centre.

His legal team has argued that his detention outside Gauteng severely limits access to their client and undermines trial preparation. The defence is formally seeking his transfer closer to the Johannesburg High Court, where proceedings are being heard.

The court has indicated it will consider the transfer request while the matter remains postponed.

This case continues to draw national attention due to the seriousness of the charges and the legal questions around detainee access and fair trial preparation.

In one of the most unexpected turns in the Ad Hoc Committee’s dramatic hearings, EFF Commander-in-Chief Julius Malema struck a distinctly compassionate tone toward controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, delivering an emotional condemnation of the PKTT and the treatment of Matlala’s children during a police raid.

Before asking a single question, Malema offered sympathy to Matlala’s wife and children, saying no family deserves the trauma of being forced onto the floor at gunpoint. He sharply criticised police conduct, arguing that even hardened criminals should not have their children subjected to fear, humiliation or the generational trauma historically inflicted on Black families.

“No one must ever do that to our kids,” Malema said. “Whatever we do on the streets is between us and the streets. Our wives and children must not be involved.”

Malema condemned the police for allegedly pointing firearms at Matlala’s children, saying such behaviour “must never happen,” even in high-risk operations. His remarks triggered murmurs across the room, marking a striking departure from the hardline interrogation style seen earlier in the day.

A Calmer, Personal Line of Questioning

After his emotional opening, Malema adopted a gentle, conversational tone — a sharp contrast to the blistering cross-examinations delivered by Ian Cameron, Glynnis Breytenbach and Xola Nqola.

Malema asked Matlala about:

his place of birth

his schooling

his family history

his upbringing as a street child

his late mother’s trauma and passing

his connections to Swaziland’s royal household

This softer approach drew out deeply personal details, giving the hearing a sudden human undertone.

Challenging the ID Controversy and SWATI Travel Claims

Malema probed the story of a fraudulent Eswatini ID linked to Matlala, which he says was used to justify the denial of bail. Matlala insisted the ID was fabricated and that border officials failed to stamp his passport upon re-entry — a claim Malema openly questioned, noting that passport control stamps are standard procedure.

Malema pressed him repeatedly on whether a handler, not Matlala himself, handled the passports at borders.

Fronting, Business Control and the Medicare Contract.

Malema pushed Matlala on his resignation from Medicare and the appointment of his sister as director. Matlala initially denied wrongdoing, but Malema cornered him until he admitted the arrangement was fronting, saying:

“I accept that it was wrong.”

Malema argued that the practice undermines women empowerment and misleads the public about who truly benefits from multimillion-rand tenders.

A Deep Dive into Security, Blue Lights and Police Favouritism.

The EFF leader interrogated Matlala’s lavish lifestyle — including his 14-member security team consisting of special forces and task force personnel, funded by significant monthly budgets.

He questioned:

the use of blue lights by Matlala’s former wife allegations of improper police escorts

SAPS officers allegedly functioning as Matlala’s personal assistants missing persons cases involving people close to Matlala Malema repeatedly challenged Matlala’s explanation of his proximity to police power structures.

The Emotional Jerry & AB Kidnapping Exchange

In one of the hearing’s most emotional moments, Malema urged Matlala to speak directly to the mother of Jerry, a friend allegedly kidnapped and whose disappearance has cast suspicion toward Matlala.

The tense silence broke when Matlala, visibly affected, insisted he had nothing to do with Jerry’s disappearance and pleaded for closure for the grieving family.

Malema pressed him:

“Children want their father to return. No one must do this to our children and wives.”

Matlala said he does not believe Jerry is still alive, citing basic kidnapping patterns and the cost of keeping a hostage alive for extended periods.

Malema’s Final Swipe at the PKTT

Throughout the exchange, Malema repeatedly condemned the PKTT, accusing the unit of:

traumatising families

abusing power

targeting Matlala based on factional interests

violating children’s rights

His remarks painted the PKTT as an institution lacking accountability and professionalism.

A Viral Moment That Shifted the Tone of the Hearings

Malema’s soft, emotional and strategic approach contrasted sharply with the forensic aggression shown by other MPs. His combination of empathy, cultural framing, family-centered arguments and sharp political critique created one of the most talked-about moments of the hearings.

As the Ad Hoc Committee continues, Malema’s unexpected posture introduces a new dimension — one that blends emotional intelligence, political instinct and sharp interrogation into a single viral moment.

The Ad Hoc Committee erupted into one of its most dramatic confrontations yet when Dereleen Elana James delivered a forensic, unrelenting and emotionally charged interrogation of controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala. Her questioning forced him onto the defensive in a session that stunned members of Parliament and viewers across the country.

James arrived armed with documents, SAPS records and her own verification from Brooklyn Police Station. She opened by challenging Matlala’s claims that police seized and failed to return a long list of firearms, watches and luxury items from his property. She revealed that official SAPS registers tell a very different story.

“You only took one item out of SAP 13,” James said, referring to the firearm register that shows a single Beretta pistol was collected and not the dozens Matlala claimed.

Matlala insisted she was lying. James snapped back, “You are worth me raising my voice to,” prompting the chairperson to intervene as tensions escalated.

James Exposes Contradictions in Matlala’s Firearm Story

James dismantled Matlala’s narrative around firearm seizures and firearm ownership. She noted that:

• SAPS records show only one pistol was released

• A woman actually signed for items on 31 December, not Matlala

• He filed a High Court application claiming firearms that he now says were company owned

Matlala denied the inconsistencies, but the documentary evidence made his position increasingly difficult to defend.

Testing His Denials of Criminal Links

James confronted Matlala on his denials that he has links to gangs, drug cartels or organised crime networks.

“Is that what you want us to believe today” she asked.

When Matlala repeated his denial, James moved to his close friendship with Jerry, a man she described as a drug dealer.

“You refer to Jerry as a close friend. Did you ever tell his mother that he was a drug dealer” she pressed.

Matlala admitted he had not.

James pushed further and asked whether Jerry’s mother deserved to know the truth about her son.

The R14 Million Drug Allegation Shock

James delivered one of the most explosive claims heard in the committee to date. She said witnesses had linked Matlala and General Sibiya to the disappearance of R14 million worth of drugs taken from a forensic laboratory.

Matlala replied that it was the first time he heard of the allegation. James noted that the committee had been receiving evidence pointing in that direction and that the issue could not be ignored.

Bribery, Cash Drops and Favouritism in SAPS

James questioned Matlala about several payments allegedly made to senior SAPS officials, including R80 000 payments, R200 000 payments left in bins and R500 000 payments allegedly intended for Crime Intelligence officers.

Matlala denied the transactions but James reminded him that he had already admitted giving former Minister Bheki Cele large sums of money.

“Why should we believe you when you have admitted bribing a former police minister” she asked.

James also challenged him on his elite security team, which includes special forces and task force members. She questioned how he sustained such a lifestyle on the business income he described to the committee.

Kidnapping and Missing Persons Allegations

James confronted Matlala on the disappearance of his friend Jerry. She asked whether he believed Jerry was still alive. Matlala said he did not believe so because it would be too costly for the abductors to keep him alive.

James asked whether he had demanded ransom money from Jerry’s father-in-law. Matlala denied the accusation.

James’s Final Blow

James closed her interrogation with a powerful statement.

“You are not a businessman. You are a criminal involved in the destruction of our communities.”

She accused Matlala of capturing SAPS, manipulating business structures, using political connections, benefiting from corrupt networks and misleading the committee about his true activities.

Matlala ended the exchange with a quiet “I am done,” leaving the room in stunned silence.

A Landmark Moment in the Inquiry

Dereleen Elana James delivered one of the most formidable performances of the entire inquiry. Her mix of preparation, emotional intelligence, documentary evidence and rapid questioning exposed major weaknesses in Matlala’s testimony and forced the committee to confront new layers of evidence.

The Ad Hoc Committee continues its work under intense national scrutiny.

Nqola immediately honed in on Matlala’s questionable relationships with police officers, repeatedly challenging him on why uniformed officers were running his personal errands. Matlala ultimately conceded that he had indeed sent a police sergeant to buy batteries for his boat, a revelation that raised eyebrows across the room.

From there, the pressure intensified. Nqola confronted Matlala with alleged fronting, inconsistencies in his statements about tender processes, and a series of suspicious WhatsApp conversations that appeared to contain coded language. Matlala admitted he had only seen the WhatsApp bundle the night before, but struggled to explain the unusual terminology and the context of the exchanges.

As the questioning escalated, Matlala appeared increasingly unsettled. Nqola pressed him on his ties to senior police figures, including individuals alleged to have influence over SAPS tender processes. He also challenged him on accusations of associations with criminal networks, placing particular emphasis on claims involving drug cartels and the so-called “big five” operating in Gauteng.

The committee room grew tense as Nqola interrogated Matlala on payments made to various intermediaries, investigators and politically connected individuals. Matlala insisted that the payments were for accommodation and legitimate assistance, but Nqola pushed him hard on why these transactions appeared irregular and whether they were intended to influence outcomes within law enforcement and government structures.

Throughout the exchange, Nqola exposed major contradictions in Matlala’s testimony, forcing him into several damaging concessions that contradicted earlier statements made under oath. By the end of the session, the atmosphere was electric as MPs and observers recognised that Nqola’s line of questioning had fundamentally weakened Matlala’s narrative.

The dramatic exchange marks one of the most consequential moments of the hearings so far, raising fresh questions about corruption networks, police relationships and the integrity of high-value tenders. With more witnesses still expected, the pressure on the inquiry continues to mount.

Breytenbach, known for her sharp legal instincts and uncompromising interrogation style, tore through Matlala’s testimony with surgical precision. She confronted him over his long and complicated history with the police, including a string of past arrests, withdrawn charges and the single conviction that still shadows his record.

She challenged him on his unusual relationships with high-ranking police officials, his easy access to senior officers and the extraordinary privileges he allegedly enjoyed within the policing environment.

As the questioning intensified, Matlala struggled to provide coherent explanations. Breytenbach pushed him on the contradictions in his statements, his ability to obtain firearm licences despite a checkered past, the nature of his security tenders and the large sums of money that appeared to flow between him and police or political figures.

The pressure mounted when Breytenbach accused Matlala directly of corruption, fronting and bribery, rejecting his repeated claims that the payments were nothing more than “favors.” Matlala admitted that he had handed over significant amounts of money to senior police officials and individuals linked to political structures, but insisted they were not bribes.

The tension in the chamber peaked during Breytenbach’s dramatic closing statement. Looking directly at Matlala, she declared that he is “not a businessman” but “a crook, a thief, a fraud and corrupt.” She accused him of benefiting from the suffering of South Africa’s poorest communities and of hiding behind the image of a legitimate businessman while operating in the shadows.

The room fell silent as Matlala, visibly unsettled, offered no comment in response.

The confrontation marks one of the most explosive moments of the inquiry so far, raising new questions about Matlala’s dealings, the integrity of tender processes and the reach of corruption networks within law enforcement. The Ad Hoc Committee hearings continue, with South Africans watching closely as more revelations emerge.
